Help for planning a trip: Cancun, Mayan, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, or Cuba?

I am planning a surprise all-inclusive trip at a beach side resort for my wife and I. This will be the first major trip we have taken without kids.

The problem is, I can't make up my mind exactly where to go. I have narrowed it down to Cancun, the Mayan Riviera, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, or Cuba. I know she would love to go anywhere.

Any thoughts on any of those places would be greatly appreciated...
Additional Details
Just a couple of points of clarification; I am looking for an all-inclusive at a 4 or 5 five star resort. I don't plan on leaving the resort while we are there.

Also, we are Canadian, so the issues with Cuba go away completely.

I am looking for anyone who has been to any of those places -or know someone who has been to one of those places, who can give me an informed opinion on what they like/ didn't like and compare it to the others..

Thanks so much for the answers so far!

Well I would knock several of those right of the bat for safety reasons. Cancun is very drunken party town. As a woman I would not feel comfortable ever being away from your side there. It is very dangerous. I prefer Cozumel about 1000: 1 over Cancun.

Jamaica- again I'd knock that off due to safety concerns. It wasn't that long ago that they were blackballed due to all the robberies and murders of tourists and honestly I don't think they've improved that much. Though I have a few friends that have been there and stayed at all-inclusives. They had a great time. Now they were told constantly not to go off the resort property and they didn't but if you aren't staying at an all-inclusive, I'd knock Jamaica off as well.

Cuba- it's just so difficult. You can't fly there directly. It's not American friendly and if you ever need to change jobs, we won't hire anyone (i work or the government) who has been to Cuba.

So for me the only 2 safe choices you have are Mayan Riviera and Dominican Republic. I had some friends that went there for a romantic vacation and said it was absolutely beautiful. I've been to Cozumel several times and it's one of my favorite areas in the Caribbean though I'm not sure exactly where you mean in the Mayan Riviera. Cancun is considered in that as well. I've never been to Playa Del Carmen either.

EDIT:
Since you said you were Canadian, definitely put Cuba back in.

There are so many all-inclusives--and everyone has had different opinions on it. Secrets is divine. My good friends just got back in November and we are going in October. It's just amazing plus it's child free which as you aren't bringing yours, that's a huge selling point.

I've known several people who have gone to Riu and they said that was so much better than Occidentals. Barcelo - Riu - Iberostar- Almond - Couples. You may want to avoid Sandals since I don't know if I'd call it 5 star.

All those other sites are the same - go for some serious savings AND a nice resort. This site used to only offer packages & pricing for corporate employess - now they're open to the public - check out

www.MexicoVacationsForYou.com

They have 4 star All Inclusive Resorts priced at bulk rates but for individual sale, so you CAN stay in Mexico for 3 or 4 days for just $199/$299 TOTAL which is a steal, & you can just buy your own package directly online, they have lots of options, which is what we've used! Enjoy & Adios!

Dominican Republic is beautiful, trust me I'm from there
but why don't you just take a cruise that will go all around the Caribbean?

anyways, Dominican people are very friendly and kind. The food is superb and if you go to Punta Cana or Jarabacoa there won't be that much people. The beaches are great and the weather is like heaven. Hope that helped.

just to tag onto prev poster - mexicovacationsforyou.com is a subset of the larger parent company www.corporatetravelgifts.com. I have used a package from that site (all inclusive mexico resort) & had a fantastic time! I had never stayed at an all inclusive before but it was better than I thought & we could not have found such a great deal on any other site. I recommend them if you're looking for high class without the price tag ;)

If you are going to any of those I would definitely look into travel insurance. Here is a good article on it.

It's about 1000 MILES DIFFERENT from the D.R. to Cancun and that changes the weather and the water and the whole trip... so WHICH ONE IS IT?
