Do you think he is going to impose statehood? leave it the same? or push for Independence? How would you feel if Puerto Rico became the 51st state? |

I think he's got bigger problems, so he'll probably leave things they way they are. But I think it would be cool if Puerto Rico became the 51st state. How about Guam? |

ask him.
i think itd b cool to have a 51st state, but then we'd have to change the flag.
but im pretty sure p.r. wants to stay independent, with the protection of the US.
so i think it'll stay. |

First of all, Puerto Ricans will never accept to become a state. We have a little thing called Patriotism Puerto Rico is a Common Wealth of the U.S. We have the same rights, help, legal status, and benefits as anyone born in a US state. We can come and go as we please, we can vote if we go to the mainland and we can run for president if we wanted to. If the US government wanted to make Puerto Rico the 51st, not only would we not accept we would probably become independent. But the thing is, that if Puerto Rico does become independent, we would struggle a lot at first to take care of the country. So who knows what will happens. |

The democratic process (i.e. popular vote) will be the only thing that will determine Puerto Rico's status. That's the way it is now, and that's the way it's going to be. No one, not even President Obama can impose a status on Puerto Rico. Independence is an option, but only a very small (though very vocal) minority (less than 3%) of Puerto Rican's want Independence. So Independence seems but only a distant dream to that small group, unless they start thinking of taking arms and get Independence by force.
The PPD is reeling from its huge loss in the recent elections. So their slogan of Independent but Associated did not fly with the majority of the voters. They're going to have to modify their platform a bit before the next elections.
Right now the majority rule is for state-hood, but that brings a price that many Puertoricans are unwilling to pay.... more Federal control and Federal taxes. So my feeling is that the Status-Quo will remain, but in slightly modified form. How modified? Not certain... but it seems that many of the Tax Dollars paid by the federal government and received by Puerto Rico (in the billions) will have additional strings attached.
That's my 2cents on the subject.

Impose? Push? No. He will provide (through Congress) a democratic mechanism to discuss and vote on status.
I would feel good when PR become an state. |
