The main reason is lack of purchasing power, with an average salary of 15-25 US $ a month most Cubans are struggling to meet ends. An old (Russian) Lada sells for
3000 cuc (+/- 4000 US$) a ( maintained ) vintage Chevy sell
for 10,000 cuc ( prices between Cubans , foreigners can not buy Cuban vintage cars)
There are several new cars in Cuba the majority from Europa and Asia ( South Korea, Japan) . Taxis and rental cars are nearly new cars. The main reason is money and they have to justify where the money is coming from and apply for a Governmental license to own the car.

Because since the victory of the Revolution on July 26, 1953 there's (1) an Embargo that makes it hard to import foreign cars - Cuba does not have its own cars - and (2) Cuban money lost its value so they can barely afford new cars. So there are a lot of cars that were imported before the 1953 and because its hard to get new cars they repair the oldones until they break down on the streets - and then they repair them again... |

Because there is an embargo against Cuba and they can't get any new cars into the country. |

Lack of money for one thing. The American cars date back to pre -revolution and since Russia left you don't see new Ladas either. Private individuals do not have money to import new ones from Mexico or anywhere else. |

Beacuse of 2 things , the embargo and the russian alliance after the revolution, meaning that with the embargo there were no more new american cars into Cuba after 1959 so the actual owners of those cars had to "invent" every possible way to stay afloat with those cars up to today ....I call it heroism , we used to have a 1958 Ford Fairland ...it was a miracle that it was still running when we left in 1999 but many of the parts had to be reinvented or substituted, then the soviet or socialist country cars are very bad quality and they definitivelly do not last ....so the good old american cars outlasted them all ...still. |

Most of the cars in Cuba are old because a. Cuba doesn't appear to maintain an auto industry to produce new vehicles, and mainly b. the U.S. engaged in an aggressive embargo policy that failed to achieve its intended goal, the overthrow of the people's leader, Fidel Castro. All that the U.S. illegal and heinous policy accomplished was to increase the suffering of the Cuban working class and to exponentially increase their resentment of Americans and of the American government's aggressive and imperialistic policies against Cuba and most of Latin America.
Old age and sickness alone accomplished what the vain, bloated American government could not. And, no matter what happens now, the aging Cuban refugees who grew fat and wealthy in the American puppet regime of the sadist Batista will continue to rot in Miami until they finally succumb to the inevitable. They will never set foot in Cuba again. They are NOT Cuban patriots and have never have been. They are only pro-American opportunists looking to exploit anyone they can. |

because their currency is worthless, all those old cars are from the pre revolution Cuba. |
