ok. to drive and to view scenic mountains, and be in the coast, when you will in San Juan take highway in direction to Caguas/ POnce. in san juan is PR# 18 (Expreso las Americas) then when you will in exit 1 this expressway automatically convert in PR#52 ( Autopista Luis A Ferre) this highways take you from San Juan to Ponce. the whole trip is about 1 hours 30 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes. You will pass through San Juan, Caguas, Cayey, Salinas, Santa Isabel, Juana Diaz and finally Ponce. dedicate up to 12pm to 1 pm to this trip. then when you are in Ponce take again the highway in the same direction you did it. it will convert from PR #52 to PR#2. go in direction to Cabo Rojo, PR. this municipality is a touristic zone and it have beach and all of this. sea food, ummmmmm. all of this is south coast. that trip is the most scenic trip driving in highway in PR. it is beautiful because it also has a high elevation. and think it is 2000 ft above the sea. When you will exit from Cabo Rojo, you have two options depending on how tired you are, you can take PR#2 NOrth in direction to Rincon, Mayaguez. YOu will pass through the west coast. When you are in Arecibo take PR#22 East in direction to San Juan again. from Arecibo to San Juan all of this is north coast. That is the first option and it will take about 3 to 4 hours of driving. The second option is to take again the road trip in reverse. you will see the same. the driving time will be about 2 hours 35 minutes, but you will see the same, you will not see the west and north coast. then take another day to go to Fajardo and el yunque. those are in the East coast and it won't be covered in the road trip that i gave you. To get the most of the day leave from San Juan not early from 9 to 10am. you will arrive again in San Juan at 7 to 8 pm aprox if you take west and north coast also. if you take only the south coast you will arrive to san juan at 5pm aprox. Fill completely you gas tank before you leave.

PR has a near rectangular shape and is roughly 100 miles x 35 miles, or a theoretical perimeter of 270 miles to get around the coast, but there is no road that circle the coast all around, there are curves and obstacules to border and the need to change roads and get back.

A round trip can be done in two days counting for stopping during the night to rest at a Parador, with plenty of time to take photos and spend half hour in some spots.

There is a panoramic route to cross the mountains but that take much longer than the highway which also have some spots to see a good view. Be sure to get a tourist guide/magazine titled "Que Pasa" at the hotel or at the Old San Juan Area. The "Que Pasa" issues have many good suggestions on routes to get, spots to stop to eat or take pictures, also time estimates for road travel. Be sure you get a GPS on your rented car. check the site I posted here for more information.

Hey!

Words of caution: You won't find roads all around the coastline!
You will have to start in some, then take the highway, get off and go to the coast! This will make the trip longer!

But technically, you can go around the island in one day.
What I suggest is to start on the east coast to watch the sunrise, take the north route and watch the sunset in Rincon (West of course!). Then the next morning take the south route and go back to the East.

Also don't focus on the coast only! We have El Yunque which is a luscious tropical rainforest and a great cave system in Camuy!

Depending in how fast you drive, how long you take to eat, take photos and go to the bathroom. Non-stop for anything it will take a whole day from early in the morning til the evening, but if you do make these stops and depending how long you take on each, I would say 11/2 to 2 days The pretties area depends on peoples preference, to me the south and central part of the island is not so great, for the south its more dry and desert like looking and the central part its all mountains. I like the northern, western and eastern part of the island(including the islands vieques and culebra), their is a variety of beaches, mountains and scene.

everyone has an answer and a different route, but do not forget to factor in traffic!!!! a huge obstacle that sometimes can make a 3 hour trip turn into 6. Traffic jams are NASTY. Driving south from San Juan to Ponce shouldn't be a problem, and most of the interior hwys should be fairly good( although your getting into back country and the roads are quite narrow) and it is not touristy at all. Just remember that on weekends everyone like to get out of the city, so unless your against the flow on a sunday, you could be in a bit of a jam. Pee when you can, and have lots of water in your car.

since PR is all highways now, it takes three hours for the round the coast drive. the prietties drives are the mountains in the center.
