How can I get to the Bahamas from the U.S. without a passport?

I do not have a passport, nor do I want to get one. I would like to experience the Bahama islands without having to acquire a passport.

Until Jan 1, 2008, you can visit the bahamas via a cruise ship (however, you can't disembark the ship without a valid passport).

The US government has been advertising this for a year now, as of Jan 2007, you MUST have a US passport to get back into the united states after visiting a foreign country. The bahamas IS a foreign country.

You may want to consider Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Island (St. Thomas, St Croix) if you want to visit an island without a passport. They are US territories and don't require a passport.

Before you can travel to bahamas with your american birth certificate.Try calling the consulate in Bahamas consulate in NY to be sure.

If you go on a cruise ship that docks in the Bahamas, then you will be able to use documentation other than a passport.
At least you will up to January 2008, which is the earliest that a passport will be required from all travellers entering the US by sea.

If, on the other hand, you fly, then you will have to have a valid passport now. No ifs, ands, or buts.
