The best way is to avoid salads and other raw foods that may have been rinsed in tap water. I have been many times and lived there for nine months but I've yet to get it. Be careful of drinking water while showering and use only bottled water to brush your teeth. Dominicans do not drink the tap water, but buy it in five gallon jugs.

Ice is safe and juices are usually fine to drink. Fresh squeezed OJ and other juices are usually availble for breakfast.

Stay away from buffet foods that can are either reheated or have been out for too long. I once got a case of Bacillus Ceres from chicken and rice there and then found out rice is a major cause of food poisoning.

If you do get traveler's diarrhea, yogurt is good to settle things down and Imodium is available in all drug stores.

Water here is NOT potable and you not only shouldn't drink it but you shouldn't brush your teeth in it.

I live here for 10 years now and as long as I follow my own advice I have been fine.

You can eat a special meal called "MANGU' it keep you from getting diarrhea and only drink bottled water, like dasani, etc, make sure the seal is not opened. And try to eat at reputable restaurant, not street food, never, ever, If you are going to a resort you will be okay, if not then go to your doctors and make sure you're vaccinations are up to date.
And have FUN!!!!!!!

- take Dukoral before the trip... (I think you have to do it a week or two before, but don't quote me on this)

avoid any tap water as most have outlined above. brush your teeth with bottled water etc.
take Imodium along, just in case. eating dark chocolate is also a good way to get some extra antioxidants into you and it will also lessen the diarrhea effect.
I also use rum as a "preventative" medicine - works for me. -:)

CAN'T BELIEVE WHAT IM READING IN SOME OF THE ANSWERS, LIKE ANYWHERE YOU GO IF YOU EAT WHAT YOU KNOW WILL AGREE WITH YOU , YOU WILL BE FINE, KEEP TO BOTTLED WATER AND MAIN THING IS DRINK PLENTY [WATER] I MEAN AS DEHYDRATION IS ONE OF THE WORSE FORMS OF ILLNESS PEOPLE GET OUT THERE, AND JUST PUT IT DOWN TO FOOD POISONING. YOU WILL BE FINE IM SURE, TAKE MEDICINE WITH YOU THO AS ITS VERY EXPENSIVE OUT THERE .THAT'S IF YOU CAN GET IT .GOOD LUCK.

Raine Jonas, I am going to be blunt, as I for one know exactly what your getting at. I would be looking at another destination to go to I just came back not long ago and have been off work for 13 weeks so far.

don't eat or drink anything except for conch meat and your own sterile urine.
