i've also been told of hefty fines imposed of $6,000 to $10,000. The penalties on record are stiff: $250,000 fine and up to 10 years in prison can anyone confirm this and thanks for all the pertinent answers

You can just travel to the Cayman Islands, which is just 480 miles south of Miami, and go intransit to Cuba from there. The flight leaves early in the afternoon,1:15pm, so make sure to arrive there on a morning flight or the day before.

As far as I know, an American can't travel to Cuba.
It's a shame too as there are wonderful resorts there and in most occasions, the people are delightful.
I'm Canadian, and my sister goes there every year for vacation. I wish my husband and I could go with them, but he is American and when we looked into it he was told he could not travel to Cuba.
Hope this helped

It is not easy for a US citizen to travel legally to Cuba. However, many Americans go to Cuba through another country. The Cubans welcome all visitors. You will need a passport. The Cuban officials will not stamp your passport as they know that could get you in trouble when you go back home. There will be no difficulty exchanging your money in Cuba, and you will have a great time.

I have heard that the fines are huge if you are caught, but I have never heard of anyone who has actually been fined.

When my husband and I were in Cuba a few years ago we met many Americans there, including other cruisers like us who were there on their own sailboats.

You can go to the Bahamas and then take a flight there. I don't think they will stamp your card, try and see if you can. I think they have some boats that go there from Miami.

Yes Americans can travel to Cuba. There are flights always going in and out of Cuba to the U.S. But there are restrictions as to what you can and cannot purchase in Cuba and, of course, the monetary funds that can and cannot be used there.

But why don't you just look at the links below to help you find out exactly how you can do this legally and without trouble.

Hope this helps.

Since the American government permits only certain people for the most part journalists, missionaries and educators to legally go to Cuba you would have to go by way of another country such as Canada. Check the following sites. By the way, Nick is full of it, it is very safe in Cuba. I returned in December from my ninth visit. Cubans are wonderful as is the country. If you can go, by all means go.

If you are a US Citizen with no cuban descend or relatives over there , there is no way you will be given the Dept of TRreassure permit to travel to Cuba unless you are either a journalist, a priest ( with a religiuos licence to travel) ....you may want to travel tru a 3rd country like Mexico (Cancun) Dominican Rep , Jamaica , Bahamas , dont recomend it as you may be fined....big time

The requirements and all travel arrangements can be made here in the U.S. Most of the links to the information you need can be found at http://www.mycubafest.com including the U.S. State Dept link and links to agencies offering direct flights from the U.S.

Use the U.S. travelers links on left hand side of page.

i thought that americans are not allowed to travel to cuba?

Dart Swinger
Americans can travel to Cuba, but not directly from the U.S. or any of its territories. You need a passport.

You can travel from Canada, or one of the foreign Caribbean Islands, or Mexico.

If you purchase anything in Cuba, don't leave a paper trail. Use cash. If U.S. Customs or the State Department finds out, you will pay some very hefty fines.

What the first poster said, but more importantly. Don't tell anyone you are American. And you're going to get kidnapped/killed anyway, so make sure your affairs are in order, say bye to your family, and so on.
