1. Copy your passport and all other forms of I.D.

2. Keep your ORIGINAL PASSPORT in the safe at the hotel. most major hotels have a safe in the room or at least a safety deposit box exclusively for your room.

3. Keep COPIES of all other 'lesser' documents in the safe, and keep the ORIGINALS on you. In the event that you need an official ID for particular transactions, having an orginal drivers license on you would be sufficient, but losing that original wouldn't stop you from going back the USA. These documents are also easier to replace once you get back to the USA, especially if you have copies of all the information they contained.

4. Its never a bad idea to travel with a copy of your birth certificate (keep an original in the safe and a photocopy on your person). In any country, this would be an excellent basis for getting assistance from the US embassy or consulate.

Following these procedures is not a JAMAICA thing. its good international practice to do this anywhere you travel (so long as you have a decent safe in the hotel room). I am not aware of any risks in Jamaica that would make it more 'necessary' for you to do it here.

As far as getting money changed, DO NOT use the airport. DO NOT use the banks. Use the CAMBIOS. You might want to check with the airport exchange place just to memorize a benchmark for the current exchange rate, in case you have to do quick conversions before you reach a cambio.

First off, make copies of your drivers licence, passport, traverlers checks ( if you use them ) and keep those copies in the hotel room....then don't worry.

Second, NEVER NEVER NEVER use the exchange place at the airport....NEVER ! They rip you off. Wait until your in the town your going to & exchange there. Anf yeah, US dollars are good anywhere in JA, but you'll ALWAYS Get better deals using JA dollars.

My husband and I went to several places on the island. The only place we stayed away from was Kingston and we did that because we wanted to be with a local.

Find a taxi driver to take you around different places, or talk to someone at the hotel. There are many people that would not mind taking you around for a few extra bucks.

At almost all of the resorts you can convert your money at the front desk, so I would recommend taking a blank check instead of carrying hundreds of dollars.

Our resort did not have an ATM machine but I highly recommend the Rose Hall Resort and Country Club.

The service is 5 star....never had better service.

The entire hotel has been renovated.

VERY VERY NICE and the food is so so so so good.

why in the world would you walk around with a passport for? you are not in a communist block country and have to prove your identity to the 'officials'. and if your touring then you must be staying at a hotel and if your concerned about your money then you must have enough to stay at a hotel with a safe in the room or boxes that front desk uses. and i don't think that organized tours in JA get robbed or held up on the regular and all the tourist disappear!
as far as what to do if you do get robbed, the same thing you would do in your home town, tell the police and also you have the added satisfaction of going to the US consulate and getting help and aid directly from them, your tax dollars hard at work, even while you are on vacation!

my suggestion to you would be to stay at an all-inclusive resort and never leave it, you will be 'safe' there. and don't change your money over, just figure out the conversion yourself and overpay then everyone will be happy and you won't get robbed!

I would think a world traveler like you would know that the dollar works just about any place in the world but you can exchange dollars for local currency at ANY international airport at the CAMBIO... or wait until you get downtown and exchange at the bank, because all world travelers know that banks give the best rate.

World travelers like you also know that, if you get RobBED you immediately file a police report and GO TO THE U.S. CONSULATE.

convert it at the many cambios on the island. Some establishments accept US dollars. Many accept credit cards- so you can carry around less cash. Your bankcard will work at the local ATM- again you can carry less cash around.
You will be fine. If you so happen to have your passport stolen, call the police and the US embassy in Kingston for help.
Like all places there is a fair amount of risk for tourist to be targeted but you can minimize that risk be being aware of your surroundings and keeping a relatively low profile. Don't wave cash and very expensive jewelery etc around.

You can convert it at the airport where you're leaving from or at the airport in Jamaica. The airports in the Jamaica have these facilities available.

Also, a lot of tourist places accepts US dollars so you could pay in both US dollars or Jamaican dollar.

I'm assuming you're going on the North coast such as Montego Bay, Negril or Ocho Rios. You have no need to worry.

You're gonna be in an area where you will see a lot of tourists from all over the world. If you lose your passport let the hotel know and they will advise you of the steps to take such as contacting the embassy.

Don't worry so much I bet you'll enjoy your trip. Jamaica is fun and beautiful!

Oooook sounds like you're a panicy one...

Anyway I do believe that you need to go to a currency exchange outlet and change your money to Jamaican dollars. (Not completely sure if they're different to US dollars as I haven't been to Jamaica).

However I don't mean to put you off but Jamaica has some extremely rough areas... I do suggest that you stay in the tourist areas and enquire at your hotel for example about places to avoid and safety precautions you can take.

Also about the passport don't take it out with you unless it's absolutely necesarry and if you get it stolen contact your embassy. Or just tell the hotel they should always be able to help.
