the vendors are just trying to sell their stuff, just nicely but firmly say no and they will leave you alone
bars on on the windows to prevent theft... you see that in many other countries.... you see that even in miami... |

Well I'm assuming those were vendors u encountered and since they're in the business of selling then they have to do it aggressively so they're not ousted by the competition and selling groceries isn't a very lucrative venture so i guess they just added a bar for good measure.
Edit: I read some of the other answers and some of u are just downright rude...I've lived in Jamaica all my life and i have never struggled to find a meal...EVER! I am not a vendor nor do i own a grocery store with an affixed bar. I HAVE been outside of the country and I see alot of things I'd consider beneath me ESPECIALLY in the US where they have crime as well. I feel less safe there because of all the psychopaths, serial-killers, scitzophrenics and just plain crazy ppl i hear about IN ADDITION to the murderers. I kno i sure as heck never met a Jamaican serial killer (in Jamaica). I think u ppl need to realize that every culture is different and what's home to u is weird to others. EVERY nation has crime and poverty and u're just as likely to be murdered in any other country as u are to be murdered here. We have ghettos the US has the projects...SAME THING! Get over yourselves, I'm sure y'all don't beleive i'm somewhere in Jamaica on my laptop typing away under deplorable conditions...COME ON! |

Well I think the first part of your question has been answered by others. Vendors are pushy because the competition to sell is very stiff and that is usually their only means of earning a living. Just say "No, thank you" and move one usually they'll leave you alone.
As far as bars on windows go, they act as a deterrent for potential burglars. I'm sure you can see bars on windows and doors in many countries, I don't believe it is such an unusual thing. |

People should research before they answer questions and if you don't know just keep it shut. jamaicans are better off than most of us. And anywhere you go people will get aggressive if thay have competition. why do so many American athletes do drugs??? |

the vendors r desperate cuz they have children to feed etc so just come prepared with a good escuse and the bars are there for protection cuz jamaica has thiefs |

I'm going to Jamaica at the end of Feb,i know how pushy they can be but i can hold my own,the reason they are so pushy is because they think we are very rich, and we are considering how we live to them, they are virtually destitute and push to get a meal on there tables, its just the way they are. |

#1 its their only means of income ,but when politely refused will leave you alone. #2there are bars on almost every business (7 armed guards in the montego bay KFC!!!)its one of the most violent island) yet i go every year you learn what to avoid and what to enjoy! |

Jamaica is the worst place I have visited when it comes to pan handling, even worse than Mexico--and no when you politely refuse they do not leave you alone, God forbid you actually buy anything, there are 10 million people on you--Not one of my favorite places... |
