How dangerous is Jamaica? Specifically, Kingston.?

I am a white college student, is going to jamaica with my girlfriend a bad idea? We were planning on staying away from resorts. How dangerous is kingston compared to crime rates in the united states?

Contrary to most reports, Jamaica has a very low crime rate towards Tourists, most violent crimes are amongst jamaicans. That said, Kingston is a hotbed of crime with probably more than 75% of violent crimes happening in Kingston and Spanish Town, a nearby town.

However as in any city there are areas where crime isn't bad at all. Some parts of Kingston there is hardly any crime and depends on what you want to do you should have a good safe time in Kingston.

The North Coast areas of Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and Negril have less crime but it all depends on you just taking care as you would if you go to any country/city your not familiar with.

Ditto on what the previous respondent said. Any place in Kingston outside of the Kingston airport can be troublesome. Stick to the resort towns. You can still venture off the beaten path (take a road trip to Mayfield or what have you) but it'll be much much safer.

Kingston is ok depending on where you are going. example i would discourage you from going to Mountain veiw (this is the name of a city) and basically the 'ghetto areas'.

nitenurse
U might want to reconsider staying in Kingston ,its best to stay on the North Coast in and around the Montego Bay,Negril ,Ocho Rios area.

Why would you want to go to KINGSTON?
Go to The South coast for peace, North for A good time and like minded tourists.

Here IS the TRUTH. DON'T BE AN IDIOT AND GO THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!... I went there and I lost memory (at 18 years old) because of the people there. if you want to be robbed or worse killed go ahead go there. not even in the hotels are safe!!!

summa_corda
Jamaicans on the North Shore (Ocho Rios, MoBay) will tell you to never go to Kingston. The Kingstonians find this ridiculous, sort of like a person from Kansas telling you not to go to New York because it's too dangerous. Truth is there are things to do and see around Kingston, and there are places which a very safe. But you do need to know where you are going. If you end up in the wrong neighborhood, you could be in trouble.

If you want to go to some off-the-beaten path areas of Jamaica to relax and have fun -- away from the resorts -- check out Treasure Beach on the south coast and Port Antonio on the east coast. Port Antonio was very recently written up in the New York Times (the roads getting there are in bad shape, so be prepared for that).
