How dangerous is Trinidad especially for foreigners?

I am planning to go to Trinidad for about 4 months. I will be a student at uwi for a semester. I know that there isn't anywhere that is 100% safe but people are starting to scare me. I am already nervous because I don't know anyone in Trinidad and I have NO idea what it will be like. But I'm gonna be staying on dorm so I should meet other students like me. I know that anywhere you go you have to be careful and be mindful of your surroundings but people are telling me all kinds of stories about how dangerous it is and the kind of violence that goes on there. So how dangerous is it?

thank you for choosing trinidad as part of the process of you furthering your education

i cannot help but echo the sentiments of the others with the exception of barracudas'
stay with company at all times always alert someone to where you are going and avoid being in lonely areas at night,
as i write this i am one minute walk from UWI and i can tell you
i walked from Hi lo (a supermarket in the area 10 min from UWI) to hear and the pavement was quite clean a bin was available and well used for refuse
when i crossed the road drivers where more that happy to help a pedestrian and stopped for me to pass even when i was still on the pavement

it should be mentioned that crimes against women are on the rise world wide and so you must exercise Caution with a capital C

take care

hang out only with students for the 1st few days get to know the area. Use student shuttle to get around campus (it's free).
As per norm do not venture out by yourself, always ....i mean ALWAYS let someone know where you are going.
Last but not least enjoy your stay, UWI always have something going on.

sadly it is, thanks to the government's lack of everything

Just take regular precautions. Dont flash money, dont wear too much jewlery, etc. Avoid doing these things, and other things that draw attention to yourself, and you will be fine. Also, when your going out, stay with a friend or friends.

If you have time, check out the beaches, and other tourist attractions. Trinbago is a beautiful country, with kind people, delicious food, and a wonderful culture. Enjoy your time in Trinidad!

Curious!
Just practise safe habits and you will be okay! The guys gave some great advice, with the exception of Barracuda - He's just sad that all of his fishes are swimming to Trinidad and Tobago.....................poor fella, say a prayer for him

I guarantee that you will enjoy our country - its warm and beautiful, full of activites, breath taking sites and I know you'll meet some lovely people on the Campus

Trinisoccer
As with everywhere else you just have to be cautious of your surroundings.

Study hard but remember every night is a party night in Trinidad, except Monday. So be prepared to have a great time in T&T....

Yes there are serious crimes, but where else in the world is there not crime. Yep, and you have the political views that blame everything on the government this and the government that, but which other caribbean island has as much bounty as Trinidad and Tobago? I which those people would travel those islands and some European countries first before they give comments.

Looking forward in having you hear. If yuh need more info. Trinisam, Julien, Re$h, Hotta, Curious, and the rest of the posse here to help.

Welcome to sweet sweet T&T...

Barracuda
VERY.

Let me point some things out for you.

1. There are numerous kidnappings. The locals will tell you it's all involved with drugs, but do you really want to believe that? If these people find out you're from Canada or the US, do you think they'll not consider taking you?
2. The cops walk around with assault rifles and machine guns on the street. There are bodyguards for ministers who carry M4 assault rifles. Does that say enough for you?
3. Trash, garbage and stray dogs are everywhere.
4. Traffic cops are nonexistent, so every jaunt on the road is like being in NASCAR.

Stay away from here!
