In the year 1899, the USA invaded Cuba and entered in war with Spain. They governed Cuba until the 20 may 1902, when we finally obtained our independence
Right, I had forgotten. The USA owns the Guantanamo base ( it is spelt G u a n t a namo, no W ), and yes, THERE ARE Cubans there. In some cases when they are stopped somewhere, the USA sends them there. In the 1990s there was a large immigration of Cubans there
By the way, some people here would criticize you and tell you that this is the Travels section |

Actually the US does NOT own all of or any part of Cuba (including Guantanamo Bay). The US is only leasing that part from Cuba. The Cuban government opposes the presence of the naval base, claiming that the lease is invalid under international law. The US government claims that the lease is valid.
Cuba and the United States of America have had an interest in one another since well before either of their independence movements. Plans for purchase of the nearby island have been put forward at various times by the United States. As the Spanish influence waned in the Caribbean, the United States gradually gained a position of economic and political dominance over the island, with the vast majority of foreign investment holdings, the bulk of imports and exports in its hands, and a major stake in Cuban political affairs to uphold.
However, Cuba never cashes the rent cheques from the US as a point to show of such disagreement of this situation.
The United States does not have formal diplomatic relations with Cuba and has maintained an embargo which makes it illegal for U.S. corporations to do business with Cuba. U.S. diplomatic representation in Cuba is handled by the United States Interests Section in Havana and a similar Cuban Interests Section remains in Washington, D.C.; both are officially part of the respective embassies of Switzerland. The United States continues to operate a naval base at Guantánamo Bay in Guantánamo Province, a point of contention between the two countries since Cuban independence in 1902.
*edit: Josh is right about historical facts....but it seems many of us would have understood it as to mean that the US owns Cuba.
Josh, you have correct historical information.
Lo siento...BUT, Cuba was not and is not owned by the States....it was only OCCUPIED by the US...more info:
On October 27, 1492, Christopher Columbus discovered the Cuban archipelago during his initial voyage to the New World. Between 1511 and 1515, Diego Velázquez led the Spanish colonization of the island and founded the country’s first seven townships: Baracoa, Bayamo, Santiago de Cuba, SantÃsima Trinidad, Sancti SpÃritus, Santa MarÃa del Puerto del PrÃncipe (Camagüey) and San Cristóbal de La Habana (Havana). Spanish domination lasted four centuries and ended with the country’s military occupation by the United States in 1898, which continued until 1902 when a neocolonial republic was established. The island’s history has been marked by repeated struggles for independence. The first was on October 10, 1868; the last began on July 26, 1953 with the attack on the Moncada Garrison led by Fidel Castro. This revolution culminated in the establishment of the current republic on January 1, 1959.
This is the general idea. |

I am speechless!!! after reading the answers here!
US got Cuba in 1898 just at the end of the second Spanish- Cuban war which lasted three years.
The US had in the bay of Havana the Maine ship anchored and this one exploded, this explosion was actually the reason for the US intervention in Cuba, the Spaniards clamed that the explosion was self- provoked, but the truth lies at the bottom of the bay of Havana, because the US authorities then, did not allow the Spaniards to share the results of the investigations while banned the Spanish part to carry out their own investigations about that incident which cost over 200 lives, most of them Americam lives.
The Americans did not leave Cubain 1902, on the contrary, on May 20th, 1902 the Republican Period of Cuban history began, the difference is that there was a Cuban president Don Tomas Estrada Palma who adressed his very first speech to the Cuban Nation entirely in English Language!!! come on....? to a Spanishs-speaking nation!!!!!!!
If you go to Havana you will notice in Calle G (Avenida de los Presidentes) the second monument from Malecon on the direction of Calle 23) is the one dedicated to Estrada Palma, but today you will see just a pair of shoes as most of this monument was taken down in 1933!!!
During all the years from 1898 and until 1959, Americans were in Cuba, even though there was a Cuban President in the Presidential Palace, but nothing was really accomplished if unapproved by the US!!!
Even Mayer Lansky, the head of the mafia in Cuba left in 1961!!!
I would not be entirely fair if I dont say that in that period Cuban arquitechture flourished, that was the period of the Capitol Building, Tropicana, the big and luxurious hotels, and buildings like the former Havana Hilton, and FOCSA, Bacrdi Building and all the houses of Cerro, Vedado and later Miramar.
Guantanamo bay is another story, it is there since early 1900 shortly after the Platt Amendment, and Castro even if he would, he could not cash the checks due to the embargo which includes as well all finances, I believe that the payment is 4095 USD per year for that leasing, I am not so sure of the exact amount, the source was a good friend who is a historian (American born) |

For the contrary of what the others say , USA does have a portion of CUBA ,check if not the Wantanamo Base , there are no cubans there ,they are not allowed to be there , its a portion of cuba owned by USA in exchange to usa for not invading Cuba. |
