Go to the US Department of State website http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html and print out an application and fill it out. You'll need two identical 2" x 2" passport pictures - get them taken someplace that advertises that they do passport pics (Kinko's, many drugstore chains) - it'll cost about $10 or so. If you're an adult born in the US and have a birth certificate with the raised seal on it, and a drivers license, take those to a passport acceptance agency - you can find those listed on the same website - many large post offices, some libraries...

There are some alternate acceptable types of proof of citizenship and proof of identity, but these are the most commonly used.

If you are a naturalized citizen, bring your citizenship papers.

The acceptance agent will send in your birth certificate with the application, but you'll get it back with your passport.

You'll need a check or money order for $67 made out to the US department of state, and $30 for the acceptance agent (some take cash, others want a check or money order for the $30).

Normal processing takes 6 weeks, sometimes a little more. You can get it expedited and get it in two weeks, but it costs a lot more. It is possible to get even quicker than two weeks if you're leaving sooner - see website for details - but is a real pain and quite expensive.

Kids, depending on age, have somewhat different requirements. They still need the two pics and the birth certificate, but depending on age, one or both parents must be present for them to apply.

The website will probably answer most of your questions.

I normally arrange passports for my clients. Depending on where you stay in Dominican Republic your passport is free.
Let me know your travel dates and I can get this ball rolling for you.

There are several place where you can get an application for a passport, such as a local courthouse or post office. You'll also have to find some place where you can get your passport photo taken, such as AAA or Wal-Mart, though I don't suggest Wal-Mart--I was in line with a person at the post office who couldn't use the photo she got from Wal-Mart because it was so shoddily done.

AAaaanyway, I think it takes 4-6 or 6-8 weeks (something like that), but since Hurricane Katrina, getting a passport is a bit slower since one of the main passport agencies was in New Orleans.

go to your post office and they can help you it takes about 6-8 weeks and you have to have your picture taken separately once you get it
