What M W said is true but i know (by way of family members still living there) that they make what they can from the tourists. Some will offer to help with baggage, private tours, bike tours and rickshaw rides, arts and crafts they sell on the streets, fresh fish caught with safety pins and cooked up in small "in house" restaurants that are considered underground, but can be popular with tourists in the know and then the old standard and oldest career - prostitution. Sad but true.

Generally speaking, they do not make money. That is what a socialist economy is. Everything goes to the State (country).

el loco
Like in any other country..almost

We make money by working, but what we obtain is a very little amount. Some people dedicate to personal business, which can be half legal or totally legal, depending on the case and the circumstances.
Before fidel depenalized the dollar, you received 8 years in the tank if they catch you with dollars. Now is not so and many people have a black market of many articles

Tapestry6
People have small shops, small farms just like they did in Mother Russia but the profits were mostly turned over to the state to distribute to everyone. So no matter how hard you would work you would still have the same amount of money that those who sat around all day donig nothing. Ain't socialism wonderful?
NOT!

Rick
Most people work for the state. Cuba is a comunist regime where the state controls everything. Recently there has been a relaxation, allowing a little of small private enterprise where people operate minor things. Some people work in tourism and receive dollars

Oh, right, the ones that know it all about Cuba, despite not being Cuban. Indeed

Sadly, I must say that now that Cuba is ruled by the Castro Mafia, fidel himself makes the propaganda advertising that Cuban prostitutes are the cleanest

Cuba is STILL the "bordello of the Caribbean" and the pimp is fidel

What a shame !

At least Batista didn't shame the Cuban women with that kind of propaganda. He was more decent

Different ways. Most people must work for the government, because Cuba is a totalitarian regime, where the State controls EVERYTHING.
After the depenalization of the dollar, some people could open small businesses.
I am a physician, and some doctors in Cuba worked also as taxi drivers, because they made more money

Interesting !
People that claim not to be Cuban, but from other countries like canada, admire, worship , and love fidel, trying to justify it by saying that he eliminated the mafia, the corruption in Cuba, etc

I cannot understand how some people can be so blind to reality. A true denial
1 - That happened in Cuba. It is our country and OUR business, nobody else's
2 - Happened 50 years ago. I must assume that these people still use medical practices from the shamans native Americans if they stick so much to the past
3 - fidel replaced that corruption with his own, much, much worse

There is no excuse to support a dictator, especially a foreign one

It would be so nice if people used their very valuable time and efforts to deal with the problems of their own country, instead of messing with other countries, but it seems that that is to ask way too much

People in Cuba don't make money like you think. They either work for like $15 dollars a month, or steal, or become prostitutes (most popular way of getting dollars).

Robert H
Cuban cigars!

Riki
The same as others all over the world, they work at the same professions and trades as everywhere else. else. bakers, electricians, construction workers, farmers, plumbers, engineers, shop clerks, teachers, bus drivers, you name it and now with tourism a big part of the economy thousands of Cubans are employed at the resorts. Yes, unfortunately there are prostitutes the same as there are prostitutes every where in the world. Fortunately Cuba is no longer known as the "bordello of the Caribbean" as it was before Castro during Batista's regime when the Mafia ruled Cuba.
