Most people associate Jamaica with either Bob Marley or the Rastafari relgion. Both of which have much to do with the habitual smoking of ganja. Due to this most people think of a Jamaica and they think of the stereotypical rastaman who has dreadlocks a red, green, and yellow shirt and a huge joint sticking out of his mouth. Its similar to how most Americans think of the Irish are leprechauns and Africans are all skinny, tall, and have a very dark complexion. It's just stereotypes being played out in real life. |

Jamaica and weed, I have no problem with the association. I just hate the fact that everyone thinks we have it going around here like crackers. Weed is illegal in Jamaica. |

The association with weed & Bob Marley ( in the states ) is most annoying. You see posters with him smoking & its on anything they sell from insence, to t shirts....he was more about MUSIC and social messages than weed ! |

Nobody never ask me that cause they look at me and think I'm not Jamaican cause I'm a mixed Jamaican. They think all Jamaicans have dreds, smoke weed and are black people. False ! False ! Jamaican full of all races and skin colors but are all Jamaicans ! It look like this problem is only for the Americans. Stereo-typing people.
I had a friend from long time who called me Ja-fakin ( fake Jamaican ) just cause she say I don't look it or sound it. Me and her not friends anymore just because of that. A next story, I went on a trip last year to Jamaica and my boyfriend at that time called me and asked me if I'm smoking the weed and ganja and drinking alcohol rum. What he think Jamaica is just about that ? That's why I'm not with him anymore.
More people need to go to Jamaica and stop assuming these false statements they make. What you may have seen or heard is not Jamaica , you have to visit the beautiful island to find out the REAL ting !

I find it extremely annoying. I for one have never smoked anything in my life and to be constantly asked that by ignorant stereotyping people is exceedingly irritating. |

we all have images of others, some accurate, some less so. Jamaica does have a high level of poverty and use of weed & alcohol, so the generalization is not surprising. If you don't smoke weed, it's not an issue, is it? |

I've been to Jamaica twice. Both times I was approached numerous times and asked if I wanted to buy weed.
I have been to many countries, most of Mexico and the Caribbean, USVI, and others.
Jamaica is the ONLY country where this happened to me.
That's why I will not go back. It got so bad the last time that we had to stop going to the beaches. |
