When you live in the Caribbean you can always tell those who are born there from those who were not from the in which the word is pronounced. The word sounds like Car-RIB-bean, keep in mind that the group of islands was named after the Caribs who were the 2nd Indigenous Indians to live in the islands before the Dutch, Spanish, English, French and Portuguese's arrived.

One pronunciation (Ca RIB e-an) is used by the US, and the other (Ca rib E- AN) by the British.

Funny you should ask that. My husband and I have often wondered that ourselves. I looked it up in the dictionary and it is technically pronounced Car-ib-be-an, like the Disney ride. However, i feel either way it's correct. Putting the emphasis over the "rib" part versus the "be" part is just a matter of pronunciation, dialect and possibly preferance. Like CaRIBbean islands versus Pirate of the CaribBEan.

Both pronunciations have 4 syllables. The dictionary says both are corrent, however I find it classier to say it with the accent on the second syllable.
