How does reading your dialect in message sound to you? |
I read through several answers with profound use of dialect and couldn't help but laugh and yet be disappointed. |

I am not disappointed by the dialect at all.
I understand every single word in the dialect as you call it.
Sometimes I laugh and I feel proud that my fellow Trinis are so proud of themselves , their roots and their culture, that I say out loud, GO TRINI, show the world our culture, show them our language and most of all show them we are a proud people and we don't care what others say about our way of talking or writing.
At first I had said why are the Trinis on the forum do not write the way they were taught in school, and I got some pretty nasty words from some on this Y/A.. But, Trinsoccer told me it was all in fun and they were having a good time.. I did some soul searching and said to myself who am I too question how my Trini people relate to one another, when all they're doing is speaking in our own Trini Language..
Anyway, we Trinis can speak proper standard english like any other english speaking country when we have too.. If the atmosphere calls for it, we adapt our way of talking if we have too or if we want too.
We Trinis do whatever we want and that also include how we relate to one another in our environment, be it in trini dialect as u say or be it in proper standard english.
We are proud that we can do both at any given time.
So reading the dialect in messages just makes me proud of my fellow Trinis.. I love you GUYS.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS! ONE LOVE FOR ALL. |

yuh laugh AND yuh disappointed dread...... ah lost with dat one |

Well chic its natural to us as it would be for any other culture.
I suppose it is hard to read broken english for some people - but remember we sometimes write as we speak so its natural for some. This forum enables us to be ourselves - in our native tounge.
My question to you is - why be disapointed? Is it because you think we can't write proper english |

Hey now, what's wrong with our parlance??? ,-)
Many times I find it rather witty and crafty in the way that Trini-bagonians (or Caribbean people in general) have soo much fun with the English language. I mean from our Extempos, Kaisos, and Calypsos right down to our occasional tendency of speaking in puns.
Accented talk in the written form I think is also acceptable personally (when amongst other Trinis). Much like how Spanish people who live in the USA for a while tend to speak in "Spanglish" (basically a mixture of sentences containing both English and Spanish.) when amongst one another.
The funny thing I come across is sometimes it is more witty to drive home your point or statement in the Caribbean accent and lingo than in standard English..... I mean we have a whole different rhythm and rhyme, plus certain words don't have the same meaning in English. E.g. the word "Malicious"...
Again though as was already stated, there is a time and a place for everything. A person should be able to form a simple coherent sentence when the time calls for it, but like when someone asked about the earthquake I knew it was going to be read with the most interest by other Caribbean persons. So I let my hair down too. =)
A great deal I think has to do with pride. We basically are reverting back to 'we selves' even when in foreign and under different cultures. I'm less likely to reply to a tourist on here in "parlance" (as I've heard my Grandmother call it.) simply because the reader may not understand or even relate to what or how I'm stating something. After all, when replying on here I think it is important to bare in mind who is the intended reader you're trying to connect with. |

Why are you disappointed? Someone posting their
question or answer in dialect does not mean that they
are uneducated or lacking in social graces. There are
other things to be disappointed about. Life is too short. |

I'm not Trini but as a fellow cairbbean person it doesn't really bother me. Maybe its because west indians can understand each other but no its not read any differently than how i would normally read a post.
I guess if you not of caribbean origin or caribbean born and bred it can be confusing to others.

It always confuses me, yet people lable me in this forum when I conveyed my honest views about it. I understand the dialect when i hear it spoken but I'm unable to understand it when read. |
