Politics in Trinidad and Tobago is probably affected more by race and ethnicity than by religion. It is well known that the majority of the UNC's support come from the Indo- Trini (mainly Hindu) community while most of the PNM's support comes from the Afro-Trini (mainly chirstian) community.
Having said that there are pockets of support within these communities that probably has something to do with religion. I think the UNC had significant support from the Shouter Baptists in 1995. Also the Muslims fearing a Hindu dominance has often thrown its support behind the PNM.
It has been argued that one of the reasons that the PNM has been able to dominate Trinidad politics for so long is its ability to generate support from parts of the Indo Trini community. For example SWAHA which is a Hindu group has supported the PNM in the recent past.
The Presbyterians who are mostly Indo Trinis have been about 50-50 in their support of the PNM and UNC. This s possibly because most Presbyterians live and go to school etc in the urban areas and do not as readily identify with the UNC as their rural counterparts do.
Now of course there is the Congress of the People (COP). COP supporters see themselves as being able to look beyond ethnicity and religion. Many Presbyterians have gravitated towards the COP, as well as many of the more educated Hindus and Afro Trinidadians.
Quite a complicated picture huh?....Well thats politics in Trinidad for you!!
