How hard is it to communicate in the Dominican Republic if you speak english? |
I may be taking a trip down to the Dominican Republic in a few months and have heard that it's hard to talk to people down there because everyone speaks spanish. I don't mind learning some simple spanish to make it easier on the locals, but is this enough? I will be staying at a resort down there so I would imagine some people would be able to speak english at the hotel. I'm just worried that it'll make my vacation a little harder to enjoy. Are you better off going to an island where more english is spoken? |

Dominicans are familiar with English, especially the American kind, thanks to over 100 years of American influence in the Caribbean. (Baseball is the most popular sport in the D.R.) So you might find someone among the locals who can speak English fluently. Many of them have family in the U.S. and, incidentally, a cousin of mine living in Santo Domingo is taking an English course and wants me to help him with his English.
Also, there are more than a few U.S. expat retirees living in different cities throughout the D.R.
In the airports and tourist areas, almost all the main staff know English and, for a fee, an English-speaking interpreter can be provided if you need one. Outside the tourist zones, however, you should either know Spanish (like I do) or have an interpreter or favorite local guide with you. If you have the latter, it makes experiencing life outside the tourist zones much easier.
If perchance you are interested in learning Spanish, even the most elementary Spanish phrases will do. You will be forgiven if you make lots of mistakes the first time and your earnest efforts to learn the language will be appreciated. |

Well GOD FORBID you may have to learn a bit of Spanish... besides.. all AmeriKans know that if you walk up to a foreigner and SHOUT IN THEIR FACE.. they will immediately understand Amerikan.
It depends on where you go in the D.R. If you stick to the tourist areas there is a lot of Amerikan spoken.. if you get out into the countryside... YOU WON'T UNDERSTAND A WORD. |

I went down there and they do speak English. They should speak enough for you to communicate with them. If you have problems in terms of money in a taxi make sure he writes it down for you. Figures are universal so 20 is 20 wheresoever you go. Just make sure it is in the right currency. |
