Jamaica is a beautiful island!! Keep in mind you are going a THIRD WORLD COUNRTY so don't expect America..
Poverty in a third world country doesnt't mean the same thing in a first world country..so pity is not needed..but embracing of the beauty is! Just open up your mind

Afterall, you left America because you wanted to get away from it, right?

There are bad neighborhoods just like EVERY place. I'm surre you won't be around them since you'll be a tourist. Just be cautious, as you ARE in a NEW place and anything can happen since you are new. This caution is for EVERY new place you go..

The people drive DIFFERENT from America or other places. It's a different place..different culture..expect difference! You can find different driving styles in your own state.Jamaica drives faster...

And sure you are going to be approached to buy things since you ARE a tourist. How to handle them is IF you didn't ask for it..don't pay for it (like wiping your car windows) and don't be rude..just say no thank you..walk off..and if the keep on pursisting just ignore them. It's really not that difficult..just see what the jamaican residents do!

The HOTELS are FABU!! GREAT SCENERY..GREAT PEOPLE..ENJOY YOURSELF

Affordable? $68 to a U.S $1..so YES it's affordable..

Entertaining: EXCELLENT PARTIES..try to find "exclusive" parties..about $40-60..that pays for an all night of FOOD and ALCOHOL..not just "finger-food"..I'm talking about FOOD!
BEST PARTIES OF MY LIFE... I remember one called "OSMOSIS"..i go there EVERY YEAR..last time I went..a bus picked me up from the parking lot and carried me to the party location..and then carried me back to my parking lot when done! COOL, HUH!!?

Clubs are margarita ville..quad..MANY OTHERS alot of fun...don't go to cheap parties..it's not as fun and more violence occurs there

The dancing there is more provactive..once again..just be OPEN-MINDED. Dress code..SOME are revealing and sometimes "costume" like(it is really a costume for dancers)

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS:
Ride horses on the beach..in the water..

Green Gutter Cave

Swing in the trees..

Get mini jeeps and ride through a jungle(i think) with friends

Eat food..right ON TOP of the water..COOL!

Snorkel

Water activites

Lots more!

FOOD: THe bomb! make sure you get some JUICI patties..stop by the ROADSIDE to pick up food(they will be ALL OVER YOUR CAR asking for you to buy there stuff) Don't worry, these are people Just trying to make a living! Just GET what you WANT and RUN..or else you're going to buy EVERYTHING..there very persuasive..
They make you taste there food before you buy it..whichever persons cooking you like the best is the one you buy from!
LEMME TELL YOU..ROADSIDE people COOK THE BEST..the restuarants can't compare!! But, believe me, some restuarants are THE BEST..they taste so gooood!!!

TIME: Jamiaca runs on ISLAND TIME(this is a saying for the caribbean) ..meaning sometimes you are waiting longer than you wish. Just remember, its a relaxed place.. "no
worries..take your time". Be at a relaxed pace..

PEOPLE: Very friendly..some people may call you "whitey"..that is not to be racist..but since they don't know your name..they call you by whatever they notice first--to get your attention.. More Examples: "blackey..if your dark-skinned".."Foreigner..if you american".."white teeth"..if your teeth are extremely white.."pretty girl".." "sexy boy"..you get the picture right...

Oh yeah..THE BEACH: Beautiful and people SERVE you on the beach..a person will come up to you and ask you if want any food..take you a to a hut on the beach and prepare you food there(even lobster)..you eat in the hut and go back to the beach

One more thing: If you embrace jamaica's culture, jamaican people will embrace you! Don't criticize them or carry on like you are "better" than them. Jamaicans do not like that. Once you visit jamaica, it means you ARE a jamaican for the time period you stay. You are no better or worse than them..

Jamaica's motto is:
"Out of Many, One people"..meaning although we stem from all different races, classes, and places we are still one nation..

They live and bleed that motto..so respect and stay true to it

Don't judge them, enjoy them..

YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE JAMAICA..plus its alot more fun with a GROUP of People!! i KNOW from experience!

MO
Safe: Safer than the U.S. most likely.
Affordable : Affordable if you keep on the lookout for airfare deals. Roundtrip from LAX to MoBay on American Airlines $376 including taxes! Also, very affordable if you stay away from resorts and stay in guest houses.
Entertaining : Most entertaining if you like hanging out with Jamaicans, love reggae music, love the outdoors......

Let me tell you the true from someone who live in Jamaica all my life, ALL OF THE TOURIST AREAS IN JAMAICA ARE 100% SAFE , I CAN TELL U THAT FOR A FACT OR THE FBI WILL BE UP OUR U KNOW WHAT IF ANY THING HAPPEN TO A U.S CITIZEN. Affordable not so much, it may cost u a little, entertaining VERY, would it be worth going, HELL yea!!

The Goddess has it right.

Get away from the tourist areas and mix with the locals - in the day time and not in Kingston.

Jamaicans are the most positive people on the the planet. They will give thanks even after working a full day for 5 dollars. They are very proud of their island and are eager to educate you about it. My best friend lives in Ochie and we speak via phone 3 or 4 hours a week. A fantastic person !
I would exchange US dollars for Jamaican dollars, and know your conversions. Some things are cheaper there, like sugar, fruit juice, car insurance, but most things are more expensive because of Jamaica's high import tariffs.
a dozen eggs - 1.80
milk - sold by pint or liter - much more than in the states.
sugar - .18 to .25 cents per lb - brown

Tourism is one of Jamaica's major industries, and as TheGoddess said, there are trying to make a living. A living to many there means under 100 USD per week. Many more like 50. So when tourist land, its time to get busy. I would do the same if in that position.

I will be staying with my friend for 14 days in August and will report my findings after my return.

Looking foward to drinking in the rum bars, eating their food, learning more Patios, and becoming one with their culture. They are really just like us in most ways. I am sure I will find a new appreciation for what I have in States when I get back.
