How many people in the Dominican Republic speak English?

I haven't been back since 1997. Is English more common now? Are more and more people mastering it? Is it mandatory to take an English class in schools now?

More of the younger generation are speaking it now but older Dominicans, 40+ no. It is taught in the schools. However, although attending school is manatory the reality of the situation is that many kids don't go because their families cannot afford to buy the necessary uniforms, books and supplies. If you are going to the North coast you can help by supporting the Sosua Kids Association. Please see the link below for more information.

Most people do NOT speak English! It has been a required course in schools for a long time but the school system is so poor here not much gets taught and many many drop out.

The upper class speak English because they go to private schools because their family can afford to send them there!

The ones that do speak English from the lower classes are able to get better jobs in the resorts and restaurants that service English speaking people.

The answer of my friend Jazzpaging is the correct one.

I go to Dominican Republic every winter. I find that most people do not speak english. Most hotels , resturants , and banks will have someone that speaks english. but the vast majority of the population don't know english well at all.

I will be heading there in three weeks and I know people that have been there. It is very common for the workers to speak english on the resort as well as when you shop. Yes, they do speak english but I don't know if it is mandatory.

I was there in 2006 and it seemed pretty common. The tour guide we had, said that because they rely so heavily on tourism, they are teaching English and French in addition to Spanish in the schools.

I'm sure more people speak it and that they're teaching it in schools now. I'm not sure if it's mandatory, but I am almost sure more people are speaking it.

there is a very low percentage in people who actually go to a classroom and study English. yes indeed now is more common i don't know and don't think about mastering but they sure know their stuff - i don't think is mandatory in schools because they also teach them french

IT'S ALL ABOUT WHAT I THINK
Well let's see...I'm thinking of heading over there tomorrow and make a count. I'll let you know when I'm finished.
