How safe is Trinidad and Tobago for tourists?

Let me give you an unbiased answer:
T&T has it's fair share of problems with crime.
Unlike many islands in the Caribbean whose national income depends at least 50% on tourism, Trinidad does not fall in that category and therefore everything and anything concerning crime is reported, front page and all for all to see and take precautions so that you're not lulled into a false sense of security like some other islands who try to make the tourists believe that NO crime ever takes place there and try to downplay whatever becomes public.
Do your research, find out from others who may have been here and come to a decision that best suits you.

I think it is as safe as you want it to be...it is like any other island
you can't flaunt your money, jewel, job, family riches...it is like going to mexico..you know how you always have to stay in the tours, the beach
close to the hotel, shopping in safety...
the crime in trinidad is like the other islands..it is just that trinis are honest about it compared to other places I could name..so it is up to you..if you know you are in a tour with the hotel and will be doing what they say..go..if you have family or friends there..go..if you are going by yourself and none of the above..I would say don't go..

Just exercise precaution and simple common sense. You can't travel anywhere looking like a target for thieves. Be aware of your surroundings and find out how to get to the place you are heading before leaving your base so that you are not caught asking strangers for directions. This goes for any country, even though they might not be in the media as much as T&T. My friends and I go there pretty often, and incident free.

As long as you take the necessary precautions and use some common sense and street smarts, it's VERY safe!

It is pretty safe
But not as safe as other islands.
As long as you do not do anything like wear tonnes of jewellery and stay out in all hours of the night and flaunt what you have

Sad to say but the murder rate for Trinidad and Tobago is about 30 per 100,000. Compare that to 5.6 per 100,000 for the USA. In the U.K. it is even lower. These are the FACTS although many Trinis try and pretend that everything is sweet in good ole T&T.

Of course there are also many serious crimes that go unreported. I know this from talking to reporters from the more reputable media houses.

don't wear flashy jewelery. you'll get robbed and may get killed for it. just follow basic precautionary measures and you should be relatively safe. but the way they killing tourists here, sorry to say but i can't type and TnT safe, i wouldn't suggest you come. if you do decide to come, don't look like if you are the CEO of any big company. you'll be targeted by criminals. it's the truth unfortunately.

Not very, stay away. There are plenty of fatal traffic accidents because cops don't really monitor the roads.

If you want an indication of how bad the crime is, there are policemen armed as heavily as US soldiers at roadblocks in Iraq. Not good. Ministry bodyguards carry M4 assault rifles around.
