How strict is Jamaica on their marijuana laws?

Yes, we know its illegal and would be taking a risk, but how can tourists "safely" smoke while visiting? Are the police quick to arrest violators? Has anyone had past experieces smoking in Jamaica?

as long as your staying at certain resorts you will be okay buying off the local people. They usually go around on kayaks or raft selling jewlery and trinkits, but just ask them for some smoke and you will be happy. We stayed at Sandals Royal Caribbean for our honeymoon and got some awesome purple haze special ordered for us, from the mountains, ask for "Tony Montana"....lol

Keep in mind that once you leave the United States, you have no rights. You are in a foreign country, regardless of political relations. You will be put in jail and left there until they decide to put you on trial. then you will be sentenced to a few years. So, you have to decide what its worth.

If you are going to smoke it, smoke it in your room.

Forget Jamaica. You can go into a bar in Amsterdam and buy any weed you like. It's legal to smoke in the bar.

I know it is illegal here but almost everyone smokes it. And as far as the police is concerned, some of them smoke it too, the police are very corrupt in Jamaica, most of them that is. The police have been coming down hard on people that smoke it, so i would not actually smoke it if i were you. But it is everywhere you go, you cant escape from it.

It is illegal, but you can easily. We were approached several times with various items. And the sunrises on the balcony were beautiful...

the police dont enforce the laws. there is a Ganja Mountain... as it is called by the locals... just ask a bellhop or some reliable-looking (i hate to judge) person for some ganja... the police wont bother with a tourist smoking... its so tolerated that it shouldnt be an issue.

just remember.. always pass to the left!
haha

peace.

Do not smoke weed in Jamaica. You will get arrested and perhaps banned from staying here any longer. People get away with it but you may not be so lucky.

No, they are stick if you have large quantities but if you have connections, you cant easily aquire weed. Well, if you do decide to smoke weed in jamaica, I suggest that you dont do it publicly so that there is a less chance that u may get caught, and also, if you do decide to smoke in public, dont do it in a place where u know cops will be (ie Bus parks, tourist destinations, ect)

Kingston, Jamaica -- If Jamaica legalizes small amounts of marijuana for personal use, it could violate international treaties and bring sanctions from the United States, a Jamaican official has warned.
Jamaica's Parliament is considering relaxing drug laws to make small amounts of marijuana legal to adults for personal or religious use. The proposal follows complaints by police that marijuana-related cases are clogging the Caribbean island's courts and jails.

But speaking to a parliamentary committee Wednesday, Solicitor General Michael Hylton said any relaxation of drug laws could ''be in breach of [Jamaica's] international obligations'' on drug control.

Jamaica has signed three international treaties that make possession of marijuana a criminal offense, including the 1988 U.N. Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances.

Hylton did not outline possible penalties for violating the treaties but said decriminalizing marijuana could put Jamaica at risk of losing its annual antidrug certification from the United States. Countries that lose U.S. certification can face economic sanctions.

The U.S. government, which gives Jamaica up to $2 million in annual aid, has consistently opposed the island's efforts to loosen its drug laws.

Jamaica is among the world's biggest exporters of marijuana and a chief supplier to the United States. Rastafarians on the island also say smoking it is a part of their religion that brings them closer to the divine.

Last year, police seized more than 59,400 pounds of marijuana and destroyed 741 acres of marijuana fields.
