I stayed in Porto Plato and we hired motorbikes and went to
Sosua, it's very nice, not as touristy as most other places, great beach, no beggars and a lot cheaper than Poro Plato.
If I go back to the Dominican Republic I would stay in Sosua.

The thunderstormes are o.k and don't last long.

We are in Luperon, on the north side of the island, like Sousa. The Dominican Republic is a lovely country and the people are very sweet. Be sure and smile a lot and say hola to everyone. Don't worry about the thunderstorms. They happen often but don't last all day and the weather in between is sunny and quite hot so you welcome the thunder storms (usually later in the day) to cool you off. The island is very green and lush as a result of all the rain. Enjoy!

I see someone has answered from Luperon - I went there a couple of years ago, and it was fantastic. Have a brilliant time, and don't be afraid to leave your resort to go out for dinner with the locals, its amazingly cheap and the people are really friendly. Also if you are gonna buy anything, don't buy it in your resort, go to the local town where everything is a fraction of the price. I had my hair braided in the local town for about Â£5!!!!

I've been to Punta Cana and it is beautiful there. Keep in mind that it is a very poor country and the people bend over backwards for you (they realize that tourism is a huge part of their economy). They deserve tipping for everything.

Just got back from Puerto Plata about a month and a half ago. Weather was beautiful...didn't rain one time. The DR is my *new* favorite vacation spot!

Have been to punta cana its nice in the dominican but i preffered cuba, sure you will have a brilliant time we had rain when we were there but it was over really quickly and it would thunder at night and the storms were amazing.
We are off to the maldives on thursday can not wait
