The "L" Word
 |
Buy anything made by locals that support the local industries on the island. Avoid souvenirs made in China.
Traditional Dominican products include:
* Rum (Brugal is a major brand): http://www.brugal.com.do/home.htm
* Arts & Crafts: http://www.dominicana.com.do/cultura/arte.html
* Amber and amber jewelry: http://www.amberworldmuseum.com/
The Dominican Republic has the largest source of Amber in the world. The opening scene of the film "Jurassic Park" shows this fact. Amber jewelry is not only beautiful but its' a worthwhile investment. |

A beach property to come every year or 3 times a year and relax yourself (my first thought)
Amber necklace, bracelets, or Larimar (jeweleries). local painting (Haitian art). Some local candies. Something different and locally made that you can get where you are.
Good luck!! |

First of all, you should always haggle for stuff you would like to buy. If you want to purchase gifts, etc, they will be more expensive on the resort, opposed off, ie. to right next to your hotel (at least in most cases). I reccomend picking up some paintings-- they are gorgeous and relatively inexpensive; if you smoke, pick up some cigarillo's- I'm not a smoker, but my hubby enjoys cigars and said they were great; the rum is really great, and also pick up mamajuana- a Dominican drink that is really yummy. You can buy the dry ingredients at a shop and make it when you return home (and yes, it is legal-- no drugs, just roots and things for flavoring).
Make sure you bring your own sunscreen, because it is expensive there. Also bug spray, swimming suits, cameras/waterproof cameras/film, and any general toiletries, because they are pricey on resorts.
Have a great trip! |
