Hey girl,
I live here in PR and shorts are TOTALLY accepted.. especially in summer time since it tends to get pretty hot :)
There are some places you can't go with shorts though, like a nice restaurant or those types of places where you think they require a more formal dress code.
If you plan to go clubbing or to a pub.. You can wear a nice pair of shorts (no denim) with a cute top and heels and you're good to go!
But no, you will not stick out like a sore thumb here because basically the majority of us puertorrican girls wear them year round.
Hope I helped :) |

The first thing I grab at home after returning from the states is my shorts ( I live on the island). You can use shorts just about anywhere on the island 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The only places that ban shorts are government offices and churches. I don`t believe tourists stand out here, just us locals. Good luck and enjpy your stay. |

whoever told u that obviously does not want u to show ur beautiful legs, lol
amazing what people could say. PR its not the middle east, its the Caribbean for Gods goodness sake! most girls in PR have shorts and cleavage showing, lol, even the chunky girlz. PR has a hot temperature, its summer and tropical weather, so YES, please bring shorts, bikini thongs and all sort of sexy clothes, specially if ur going to any clubs(in clubs u dress formal/elegant but sexy). shorts, jeans, capris, tank tops, sleeveless shirts, flip flops, sun glasses are the materials u need. believe me, i live in bayamon PR, near san juan which are the metro areas and i know, im tired of going to san juan, so dont pay mind to people who say non-sense^. we are not conservative unless we go to church or a fancy hotel and/or activity such as weddings and traditional occasions, but for vacation, its all a different story. the only way tourists stand out, its if u dress like a monk.
u will see the truth, when u get to PR, and then u will say: why didnt i bring my shorts, should have listen to see_ya in yahoo.
have fun! |

What does it matter? I have just got back from 10 great days in P.R. and most of the time we spent it on the beach and at the pool in the Resort, shorts are fine use your common sense. Now if your going to dinner I would wear dressier clothing. In my experience I saw many native people who were not tourist wearing shorts. |

Shorts are fine.. but yes, you will look like a tourist, and expect all kinds of attention (whistles, cat calls etc). You'll actually stand out more if you wear shorts AND sneakers.
Longer shorts or capris are probably better, all the rest too. Keep in mind it will be HOT and HUMID. You want to try to wear very light cotton. Cotton everything... except your bathing suit of course. |

Accepted where?
At an elegant restaurant ? Church? Goverment office? No.
At a Burger King? or Shopping Center? or at the streets? Yes.
Bring the jeans, casual clothing suitable for the sun & humidity. Also pack something more if you want to visit a less casual place. |

Listen, it doesnt matter what part of the world your in. Americans are always spotted without any given effort. Just like the Japanese with their cameras, savvy? |

Maybe 25 years ago "shorts" were not the "accepted" mode
but this is no longer true in the San Juan Metropolitan area.
Casual attaire is OK during daytime hours. In the evening I will
suggest more "formal" clothing.
Now if you visit towns (and I strongly recommend visiting areas away from San Juan to have a "feel" of the true PR),
the further away from San Juan you go the more "old style"
dress standards (yet casual) will be perfectly fine.
Try to visit Ponce (The Pearl of The South) and Mayaguez where the UPR and the Zoo have many visitors.
Remember that once you walk out of the airport building you
are in a Souna-like temperature (because of high humidity)
So bring adecuate "cool" material clothing for your visit.
Enjoy! |

I wore shorts and I was accepted just fine. I was obviously a tourist, but no one gave me any problems at all. |

Why on earth would someone say shorts are not accepted? That's just silly. Traveling to Puerto Rico is the same as traveling to Hawaii or Florida or California. Hot weather = shorts! I travel to PR all the time and I would never be caught with out my shorts. Dress as you would if you were in your home state. There's no difference. Unless your home state is Alaska. :) |

Absolutely untrue. It's a very accepting country. One must be careful of dress in Islamic countries. You might want to dress up rather than down in certain countries of Europe. But PR? Go for it. The people are most accepting and very likeable. Do not worry, just enjoy! |

it depends where you are going. in the country and the mountains it not acceptable. but in the coast it is ok. when i go there all i wear is my tampon and my flip flops and noone seems to mind. but if you're going inside a buisness, you have to wear at least bottoms and shoes. |

In almost EVERY Caribbean country, women wearing shorts will stand out like a sore thumb because the local women don't wear them. Caribbean countries are pretty conservative and that extends to the way they dress.
I disagree with some of the posters who say differently. I have lived in the caribbean off and on for nearly 30 years... and currently live in Antigua 5 or 6 months every year... and the FIRST thing that goes through my mind when I see a woman is shorts is "TOURIST".
The GOOD news is... you can pick up some really pretty dresses in Puerto Rico and they will be much more cool and comfortable than the heavy clothing you bring with you from the U.S... so go there with an empty suitcase and fill it up from the local stuff.
Same goes for men... the local clothing is much cooler than anything you wore. Also, most adult, middle to upper class men in P.R. dress very nicely and conservatively.
I think P.R. has some of the nicest looking Men's dress shirts I have ever seen, BTW. |

Nope, shorts are not accepted at all in Puerto Rico.! Neither are capris of jeans or skirts or dresses.! The way to really fit in is to go buck-butted naked.!! Yes, throw it all in the drawer, including the drawers. and just wear a great big smile.
You'll be amazed at the attention you get. I know all about P.R. since I read an article about it at the Dentist office while waiting to get that blasted molar filled. Hope this helps to make a nice summer for you......:-) |
