I'm interested in living and working in the Dominican Republic for some time. What should I do? |
I'm a U.S. resident and I recently vacationed in Santiago, Dominican Republic and fell in love with the country. I want to live and work there for some time. Anyone ever done such a thing? What's the basic process? |

You can just go there and stay., but be forewarned it is tough to find a good job. You don't need residence to start but you could be deported if you don't have it . Many people live and work there for years illegally. If you find a decent job and after a few months you still want to live there you should apply for residence. To find something decent depends on your qualifications. In tourist areas having languages other than English will help you a lot. Many find our Yahoo group a help, it's noncommercial. Remember too, it's one thing to visit on vacation but quite another thing to live there. Good luck. |

I just recently came back from the Dominican Republic and before that I was there as a guest, visiting their military.
Although it is a beautiful country, the government is unstable. If you have too much, the government might want what you have and take because they can. However there are good jobs to come by if you ever worked with the US government or were self employed in the US.
The average Salary of a regular Dominican resident is $3 US dollars a day. Most US citizens that live there are retired and with $500-900 dollars that they receive in pention, they can pay maids and PERSONAL security guards. This mostly is due to the fact that at least 3 out of 4 men, have either a registered or an unregistered gun.
My best bet is to retire there instead of working your way up there. Since you are american, you cost too much for employers and they would rather pay people with less experience but good english to take your spot (call center for SEARS is in the Dominican Republic).
However don't be discouraged, most overseas companies look for bilingual people all the time so I'm most certain that you could land a job with a private company. This means they should pay you what you deserve and have housing accomodations for you with a private electrical plant (Since electricity only runs until 2pm after that you need a generator) .
What I do suggest is to visit the dominican republic again and talk to the locals. Everything looks pretty in an all inclusive hotel, but the realities outside of these places are much different. Most people live well off, but most wealthy citizens there are confined to certain areas because they are "ransom" bait (this excludes the fact that they had top security guards).
In the end the best way to see if it is what you are looking for is to speak with locals (never do this alone) since the government is insanely corrupt and you may be mislead by local officials. (Try any Dominican embassy in the US, they are more trustworthy) |

Cool is'nt my hometown extravigant? Learn Spanish, but you'll find a teacher soon! very soon! The hotel and food buissness is a great start! Mabey you can pass on your knolage by building a buildding to teach torists all the things you've learned, teach locals the english langauge, and just live your life! Santigo is at the peak of torist around the end of summer, trust me, if you live there...you WON'T regret it! |

Wouldn't we all. Maybe I'm crazy too, but ever since my first trip, every year I try to dream up businesses to open.
Here is a very good site that I've used for various reasons in the past. They have a section on living in and moving to the DR.
http://www.dr1.com
Someone on this site actually helped me find my cousin, whom I lost touch with over 20 years ago and now lives in the DR.
Good luck!! |

I'm glad you love my hometown isn't it gorgeous? It is not a big process, try to make friends specially in the hotel business, they are always hiring people that speaks english, dutch and german all the time, try to learn some spanish also, and get some information at the Dominican Embassy, in New york is located at 42 or 4rd st, Ave. LAS AMERICAS, they be able to tell you what you may need, and good luck to you. |

Are you out of your freakin mind?
Wages here start at about 100 US dollars a month and that aint enough to buy rice to eat with!
You need to get your residency which costs at a discount 800 US dollars for temp and another 800 for the permanent to work legally!
This is NOT a great place to be if you have to make a living here without coming here with ooodles of money!
Best way to live here is retired with an income! |
