I've been living here in st. thomas for three years. I would highly reccommend it as a great place for a visit. A few things: On St. Thomas, check out Magen's Bay, rated one of the top ten beaches in the world. If you like shopping, St. Thomas has some of the best duty-free shops in the caribbean, where each person can take back $1200 of goods, duty-free. Also, make sure you take a side trip for a day to St. John, a US Virgin Island. (a 15 minute ferry ride costs $10 RT from St. Thomas) St. John has some of the best snorkeling in the world, like Trunk Bay. And if you have time, check out some of the British Virgins (Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke) But make sure you carry a passport, as you must clear customs when making these trips, around $40-60 each. Or you could charter a boat and visit each island at your leisure. One thing about St. Thomas, If you are traveling with more than two people, rent a car. (if you can get used to driving on the left) Because taxis can get very expensive, as the rates are set by the government and are per person, each way. So a rental car can pay for itself after three days.

Here's a website with much more info:

St. Thomas is one of the "most beautiful" islands in the Caribbeans. I have been there 3 times. Make sure to visit Megan's Bay Beach, it is awesome. You go "up" the island via Taxi (or car) and on the way you can look down and see the entire island. All the cruise ships, yachts, boats, etc. It is a very colorful island to take beautiful pictures. I have traveled to MOST of the Caribbean Islands..and St. Thomas is my favorite one! You will have a marvelous time! My most recent visit was in 2005.

Be careful at night. I used to live on St. John and a lot of naive tourists get mugged or worse yet killed in St. Thomas at night. I don't mean to scare you but take my advice. St. John or the BVI's are much safer and have more of a true Caribbean nature left to them. St. Thomas is over Americanized. It is nice but be careful at night...and some places in the daytime!

I haven't been there in years, but one of the liquor stores downtown near the water has a 50 year old Spanish sherry that is wrapped in gold foil that is excellent. My parents bought it there for years and we did also when we went, but I don't remember the name of the store anymore.

The british islands are cleaner, less crime, more polite. Its like night and day VS the US islands.

go to virginn gorda or tortola if you can .

Yeah, it was named after St. Thomas Aquinas, a Catholic saint and theologian. He's not buried there, so don't fall for the scam "See St. Thomas!" at the airport.

St. Thomas is definitely a nice place, but most people consider St. John to be nicer and more beautiful. St. Thomas is the place to go if you want to go shopping and if you want a bigger nightlife. If you're staying on St. Thomas, I would suggest taking the ferry over to St. John for a day. You can leave from downtown St. Thomas (the Charlotte Amalie dock). It takes about 45 minutes and it's pretty cheap ($8 or $9 I think). Once you got on the island you can take an open taxi ride to the beaches... I would suggest Cinnamon Bay or Trunk Bay if you want good snorkeling and don't mind a slightly crowded beach. If you want more of a private beach, try Maho Bay, Waterlemon, or Francis Bay. Back to St. Thomas, one of the best restaraunts around is Oceana. It has an amazing view of the Carribean and it's open to the air. You have to take a taxi there because it's on the opposite side of downtown, but it's definitely worth it. It's very nice and reasonably priced for the quality of food you get along with the atmosphere and outstanding service. Also, don't forget that liquor is extremely cheap there.. if you like that sort of thing. I'm not sure if you already have a place to stay, but if not, the Green Iguana is nice. It doesn't look all that nice on the outside but the rooms are nice and bright and very clean. It's also very close (walking distance) from downtown. I'm sure they have a website if you want to check it out. Hope this helps!
