NEITHER! Me and my fiance' are looking for a place to go on our honeymoon and we both were looking at Dominican and Mexico but after reading the reviews and US department of state bureau of consular affairs there's no way in heck I'll ever be going to those two places. Unless you want people coming to your hotel room at night while sleeping to steal your stuff (including hotel staff)or getting shot by locals for your shoes. And your planing on going alone...are you nuts!? Especially if your female! Do yourself a favor and do some serious research before you go. There are Americanized English speaking islands out there just as beautiful as any other. Were going to Curacao or Bahamas. St. Lucia is very nice if you can afford it. Good luck and be safe were ever you go.

I agree with the poster who suggested not traveling alone ... however, if you are set on it ... then Cancun.

As a grown man, I am intimidated by the throngs of hucksters and self-made cab drivers who approach you when you walk out of the Santo Domingo Airport ... and I even speak Spanish.

Cancun is very laid back, and a good transition into the Latino culture. If you want beaches, they are both nice, but Cancun's aren't sullied by the casinos. If you want history ... then the ruins near Cancun are handy.

Adventure ... well, you're back to the DR.

Mexico City is great if you don't have beaches in mind.

On the other hand, you could forget about both, and go to Hawaii.

Please be aware that the other half of the Dominican Republic island is Haiti, which is experiencing a civil war right now and is very dangerous. Do not leave the resort areas there! I've been told by others who have visited there that is is beautiful, but that was before the hurricane that hit 2 years ago. Now, about Cancun....I've been and it's a lot of fun, but you must be careful there as well...I was there with a friend of mine a few years ago. Luckily, we took turns drinking each night so one of us was always sober if we went to clubs. We got into a cab instead of taking the public bus back to the hotel strip. After we were in, two men other than the driver jumped into the cab, one in the front seat and one in the back. They started groping us and my friend threw her door open and dragged me out of the cab (I was in the middle back seat and the guy had ahold of me, too). We jumped out of the cab as it was moving and had to run back towards the crowds leaving the clubs. There is probably more to do in Cancun as far as sight-seeing....I would recommend there if you must go alone...Just be very careful!!!!! In the DR you can lay on the beach and that's about it!

Professional advice: Don't travel alone, especially if you're female. And stay in the touristy areas. I'm not sexist, but I can tell you horror stories of people I know who got off the beaten path, or were just a lone, female tourist who were almost never seen again. This happened in Mexico, and was in a touristy area: A girlfriend of my brother's was boarding a bus in Mexico. The bus was stopped by the local "police" and everyone ordered to stay on except for the young, white, girls that were being escorted off by the "officers" Not wanting to get thrown in jail, she started to comply, when a mexican man butted into the orders of the "police". After an ensuing argument, the "police" let her go back on the bus. Later, the man identified himself as a government official of mexico. (The only reason he had authourity over the "police".) He told her that had he not interveined, no one would have ever seen her again. This type of thing is more common than you think.
Be very careful, no matter where you go.

Cancun feels like the USA and everybody understands you...the DR is more hispanic & exotic....
It depends on what kind of person you are.....
I definetely would go for the adventure and go to the DR

Go to http://www.love.allabouthoneymoons.com they can plan any type of trip not just honeymoons. If you tell them what you like and your budget they will plan the perfect trip for you.Best of all the service is free b/c the fee is paid by the hotel or resort.

SO
I have been to both, if you want a party time, go to Cancun. If you want more of a relaxed vacation go to Dominican Republic. I went to Punta Cana, which is in D.R., and it was very nice.
