Lethe Estate (Montego Bay; tel. 876/956-4920): Found 16km (10 miles) inland, away from the beach-loving hordes, this elite retreat occupies the grounds of a 61-hectare (150-acre) banana plantation. Inspired by some of the great houses in the area, it was opened to the public in 1996. Bedrooms evoke Jamaica under British colonial rule.
Rockhouse (Negril; tel. 876/957-4373): It's like living on the west coast of Africa. You stay in a thatch-roofed villa in Negril's West Inn and sleep in an old-fashioned bed under mosquito netting. It's a splendid getaway if you don't mind climbing down ladders carved into the sea cliffs. Open-air showers cool you off-and let you put on a show for the fish.
Treasure Beach Hotel (South Coast; tel. 876/965-0110): On a lush hillside above a sandy South Coast beach, this is a place where no one will ever find you. It hardly competes with Jamaica's megaresorts, but it does offer tranquillity and a laid-back feel. Bedrooms are in a series of outlying cottages, all offering complete privacy. It's cheap, too.
Noël Coward's Blue Harbour (Port Maria; tel. 876/725-0289): The 1950s retreat of Noël Coward, this is where the playwright and composer entertained the rich and famous of his day. Today it's rented whole or in part to paying guests who appreciate its funky nostalgia.
Strawberry Hill (Blue Mountains; tel. 800/OUTPOST or 876/944-8400): This highland retreat has been called "a home-away-from-home for five-star Robinson Crusoes." Perched 930m (3,100 ft.) above the sea, it's our favorite lodging in eastern Jamaica. Set in a well-planted garden, the cottage complex is a memorable, lush retreat.
Half Moon Hall- Half Moon is just 15 minutes from Montego Bay airport .

try staying at an all inclusive hotel if you have the cash examplee breezes, if its family oriented try pebbles(FDR) or beaches. that way you save cash and meals are provided 24/7. if you plan to travel to another town where that hotel has a chain you can go across and have lunch. most hotels offer excursion packages that takes you to beaches estates, river tubing, swimming with dolphins and shopping. also you can make friends with locals and go have a good time. ocho rios, negril, montego bay , kingston all have attractions to keep you busy, HAVE FUN. for summer take sun tan lotion lots of swim wear, cotton tops, beach sandals and a nice tote bag |

It is my understanding anywhere other than Kingston, more slums and crime. If you like the beach or mountains find a nice resort. My personal favorite is Grand Lido, laid back, upscale and you can hop a taxi to Ricks Cafe or arrange a trip via the concierge. A great source is:

my rule of travel is to mind my manners and not be flashy (money/jewelry). |

If you want to have fun I'd suggest Braco, Montego Bay or Ocho Rios. Negril is very nice but is more of a honeymooner’s destination. I'd recommend the Grand Lido Braco Resort in Braco, the Sunset Beach Resort and Spa in Montego Bay or the Riu Ocho Rios n Ocho Rios.
All are all-inclusive, price very well and the hoteliers are very consistent as far as service and quality are concerned. I will be visiting Jamaica again in a month or so and I absolutely cannot wait! |

I don't know if there is a 'best' place I was soo happy to just be there on the Island.I will be going back and hope to find my favorite spot....if there is such a thing.I loved all of it ,but I hope to find a place where I can enjoy more music /night life and food..from what I hear that can be just about anywhere mentioned already here by others.I too would like to see Negril and i have heard a lot about Rick's cafe so ....enjoy..your'e in JAMAICA !! |

I'd recommend Montego Bay. Be careful among the native people. I had a very bad experience there because I was too trusting. Other than that the island is a very beautiful place. |
