You should visit the homes of the opposition. Because that would give you a real idea of how is life in Cuba
Also, visit the political prisoners.
Oh, I forgot. In Cuba there are no political prisoners now. All are ordinary ones |

My suggestion is Holguin. The resorts are at Guardalavaca about an hour away by bus. My suggestion is you check the Guardalavaca forum on trip advisor, many have photos with the reviews. I've added a site below with some great photos.

Depending on the area of Cuba that you plan to visit let's say you will be based in Havana or Varadero,
Havana city, if possible take a city tour as it will provide a good overall view of the city, later on you may go wherever you want, do not miss walking along the Malecon or seaside drive, and strolling on the old streets of old Havana.
Try not to miss Varadero Beach, stunning! and if you are there please go and enjoy a sunset at Dupont house, located in the golf course, lovely atmosphere with an old man playing his saxo while the sun sets
On central Cuba, Trinidad city, the most colonial and best preserverd colonial city in Cuba, Fantastic, and if fancy being quiet and relaxed, allow me to suggest you the cayos (cayo Largo del Sur or Cayo Coco)
For luxury resort please try the Royal hideaway Ensenachos in Central Cuba and for top service the Iberostar Varadero. Hope it helps. |

I went to Sol Sirenas Coral in Varadero 2 years ago. The beach part was nicer then any of the hotels around and the hotel was pretty good too. |

josh has given you excellent information. I will add pictures for you to see.
Might I recommend to book hotels that are no less than 4* (and Sol Melia resorts...as well as Iberostar...are excellent hotel chains and the most popular in Cuba).
If you want to stay at any casas particulares, you can find the places at these sites as well.
Have an amazing time in Cuba. Buen viaje :-)
