The Goddess

I've heard that some caribbean places "put on" a Jamaican accent for tourists?

I presume around the more touristy areas..

Is it true? Can anyone clarify that? And which islands?

**even if you come from there..you got to be honest if it's true..***

Yes mi gyal..In Jamaica it happens a lot I think its because tourist come to the island expecting us to sound like a "real" Jamaicans and are a little taken aback when we speak proper English and can read and write..I think its because of the stereotypes presented in the movies of Caribbean islands and in the tourist areas so that tourist can experience the "real" Jamaican life and culture they put on the accent and act a differently in order to influence tourist to come back and spend some money!

In St. Thomas we have people from all over the Caribbean living here: Kittians, Dominicans, Antiguans, Barbadians, etc. If you come here you'll here a variety of accents and I assure you that they're all genuine.

On another note, I can't think of any island that would belittle their home by faking another island's accent as a tourist gimmick.

The only instance I can see something like that happening is when people move here from the US mainland and attempt to fake the accent.

some people from other islands in the caribean are jamaican. I went on a cruise to St. Marteen (half the island speaks french, and the other half dutch.. but no one spoke dutch) but on the dutch side many people were from jamaica. and when i went to st thomas some were from jamaica too but the ones that werent had a similar accent. its a caribbean accent and just sounds silimar. that dont mean they;re trying to be jamaican lots of islanders have an accent similar to that

We have been to most of the islands in Caribbean. I noticed many Jamaicans are migrating to many of the other islands. I have not noticed any "put on" Jamaican accents for tourists. Most of the english Caribbean island's accents sound alike. Being from the USA, sometimes it's difficult to understand the locals. You have to listen very carefully. In the USA we have different accents too.)

i went to jamica when i was in the 7th grade every ones accent seemed to be the real thing i also went to the bahamas but i was to young t pay attention to that stuff

The Caribbean accent would sound Jamaican to people who are not from the islands, epically the Americans, they think you from Jamaica a long as you speak with a Caribbean accent.
All the islands have their own lil accent, and their own way to speak to the tourist so maybe traveling some more and getn a lil more exposure to the cultures of the different islands would help you know what a Jamaican accent and whats not.

christnp
The Jamaican accent has a big African influence. Other Caribbean islands also have that influence. There are some differences between the accents on different islands, but to an outsider, they would sound very similar.
