Even though Cuba is a socialist country, you can still travel there. Since you are looking to experience and enjoy Cuban culture and getting to know the people, you can rent a Casa Particular.

I am not sure if you are a US citizen or not, but even if you are, you can still travel there. You can go indirectly via another country such as Canada, but this would be done illegally....really though, travelling to Cuba is not what is illegal...it is the actual money-spending in Cuba that the US considers illegal.

That said, if you want to travel legally as an American (and fly directly into Cuba from the US), you can get special permission from the OFAC (see links below) and go perhaps as a student or a volunteer.
Many acquire licenses for travel for religious, medical, educational, teaching, family, journalism, volunteering purposes (among many others).

If you consider volunteering, you would definitely get to know Cubans and their culture, experience life there and really expand your horizons.

You may be able to extend your visa for 90 days...so that would be a possibility...perhaps longer depending on the purpose of your travels.

I really hope you get to go and experience this. You'll have a wonderful time and will always want to go back again.

I myself am not American. In fact, I supported one of your answers already in regards to suchlike comments.
However, I'm just covering informational bases...and looking at his profile, there is a possibility of him being a US citizen.

You need to check how long you can get on a visa - I think it is 90 days maximum.
Someone already suggested charity/voluntary work - I think this would be optional as I know Cubans travel to other countries to do voluntary work so presumably they welcome the same.
Cuba is a safe place and very interesting - have you tried the lonely planet/rough guide books to see if there is one for Cuba?
Living there would give you a good insight into true socialism, both the good aspects and the bad. I would recommend it.

If you are a US citizen you need a OFAC license to travel to Cuba. see http://www.treas.gov .With a tourist visa you can stay 60 days , if you are a Canadian citizen 180 days.
You can apply for a special visa for volunteer work or a student visa . Note that both are not free , as a foreigner you have to pay for your study or volunteer work and your stay in Cuba. The best thing you can do is contact the Cuban Embassy in your country and apply for a student or volunteer visa.

Well, me being Cuban and all...Yes you can travel there but let me warn you.

It isn't so great, a lot of people suffer in Cuba, not having enough food to eat, a good shelter and not enjoying life. I only go to Cuba to visit my family who only wish they could come live here in the United States.Although the culture is beautiful, Cuba itself is at a low point right now.

well, ive known about other cultures and 2 people who were americans who moved to cuba, but in order for u to do that u need certain permissions, get some information. oh, and if u want to move to cuba, u need to become cuban 100%, u need to love fidel, love the country, love the people, love the flag and leave USA memories behind, their is a famous puerto rican legendary singer, who wanted to become cuban, and he did, 100%, he left his country to become a cuban by swearing pledge, flag, and all. i think his name was daniel santos, so u need to be completely sure of this, because once u go u cant change ur mind and come back, u will be an immigrant to the US.

Not everyone on here is from the US this goes to the first answer.

If you are from the US though you can not go to Cuba. You can't even go to another country and try to get to Cuba, because if you are a US citizen you are not allowed there.

I believe its illegal for U.S. Citizens to travel into cuba
