I always wondered,is it legal for an American to visit Cuba?

We actually have a Navy Base on the East Shore of Cuba. Many people go there, because of the excellent Hospitals.
The link below will explain that the U.S. prohibits Americans to travel to Cuba, but, you can get a License under certain circumstances.

America is one of the few countries that makes it illegal to visit it, the rest of the world is quite civilised, and will happily accept you as a tourist, but will America take you back again?

No it is not legal for an American to visit Cuba. It is even illegal if you go to another country first to gain entrance to Cuba.

Nope. It's somewhat ridiculous, but it is illegal for an American Citizen to visit Cuba WITHOUT special permission from the U.S. Government. I could theoretically get in with my Canadian Passport, but as an American dual Citizen could face Criminal Prosecution upon entering the U.S.

The reasoning for this is the embargo with Cuba. Preventing Americans from going to Cuba prevents them from spending their dollars there. This has received more attention as of late, so I wouldn't be surprised if the embargo were lifted in the next 5-10 years.

As far as I'm aware, it's perfectly legal to go to places like Iran, North Korea, (although THEY may not let you in) and Cuba is the only place as an American you are not lawfully permitted to visit.

as far as I know it is leagle to visit the country of Cuba. You cannot however fly directly to the country you have to go via a third country (ie mexico)

NO, IT IS illegal, if have to go over for some research or report(big one) something really important you have to ask the govt to allow you.But if not then you are out of luck unless you sneak into it. The US doesnt want us giving them US dollars so if its important there is a spending limt

There are so many answers ... but the answer is technically, no, it is not legal to visit Cuba as an American citizen ... no matter how you arrive there (through another country or whatever).

However, there are exceptions ... you can be granted a specific license for the trip if you have a need. Cuban ex-patriates can visit family, medical personnel and associated travelers on humanitarian trips, professional and college athletes, flight crews on official business, journalists. Bear in mind, all these travelers still need a specifc license for the trip which is issued by the State Department.

technically no.. the bush admin tried to prosecute someone lady who flew from canada. but plenty of americans can go from either cuba or mexico.

If I pass out due to heavy drinking, fall in the water in the Keys and float to Cuba, it's legal.

you can go there but you cant bring anything back. No flights go there from the US so you'll have to go to Puerto Rico or somewhere close to get a flight there.

You can go to Cuba, but cannot fly direct, and once your in Cuba if youre kidnapped or anything happens to you the US will do pretty much nothing to help you

You can go there if you are an American, You just cannot fly there from the USA. You have to fly there from somewhere besides the USA.

the u.s.a. does not allow its citizens to visit Cuba for vacations or such things..........but you can go to Mexico or Canada and get a non stop flight to Cuba
