No you do NOT need a passport to go to PR or any other US territory & you won't need one in 2008 either. Here is the proof straight from the OFFICIAL US GOV website. (read all the way down)
"As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.
The passport requirement does NOT apply to U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from a U.S. territory. U.S. citizens returning directly from a U.S. territory are not considered to have left the United States and do not need to present a passport. U.S. territories include the following: Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands." |

there are strong rumors that in a near future we will need passports to go to P.R. this is due because there is a strong influx of other spanish speaking inmigrants entering the island illegally and they sometimes do this by using puerto rican's documents, especially people from dominican republic, who enter the island passing as puerto ricans, for they look pretty much like us. it is not really necesary to use passports if you're an american citizen, like us, but if you are puerto rican, and traveling to puerto rico or from puerto rico, and some as*hole from immigration think you are not, they might stop you and check you out. that's why i'm always go safe than sorry. |

I am 100% positive that you do not need a passport to visit Puerto Rico. I am taking my family there in about a week, and we do not have passports. I researched it before we booked the trip. The web sight for the hotel we are staying at says "no passports needed" right on the front page. Puerto Rico is part of the US. |
