Yes you do need a passport. I just went on a 2 week cruise to some of those islands and we had to have our passports to even book the cruise. I would apply for it now because that way you get it in time.

It is $100 to apply for one and make sure all your info is up to date when applying then that way your application will not be put on hold.

Just so you know you can not make an appointment with the passport agency unless you have 2 weeks or less untill you leave the US.

You need to get a passport. The law changed in Jan 2008. Apply for the passport now it can take 3 months to get.
