I stayed with someone also ,and I didn't count on having to help feed the family while I was there, and paying for tickets to go to certain events ..if you asked them to go with you ....or if they are driving you around you have to feed the gas tank ..and maybe even your guests...don't assume that your friends can afford to do all that You want to do...I was happy to share my money however it cost me more than I had budgetted for as a result......Buy your gifts from the markets from the locals.....some will barter but I think their prices are better than the touristy traps.enjoy your trip I need to go back soon myself I LoVE Jamaica! better to stay with friends see the Island in it;s true spirit......... |

It depends on how long you plan to stay and if u are staying with someone u might have to chip in for something ,and do u plan on going out sight seeing etc? if so you will need at least $500- $800 US |

bring around 2000 so you will not run out. give it to the poor in the smaller towns. if you are on vacation pay for it. |

DO not take much cash on you... you can carry one and a half times the money that you would use for the items in USA just to be sure and have money on ur credit card for extra spending or emergencies. |

In addition to whether you may be staying at a hotel or not, it also depends on where in the country you stay. If, for example, you are planning to stay in Ocho Rios, then alot of the things you may plan to buy (i.e. necklaces, shorts, etc.) will be priced slightly higher because that area is more for tourism than anything else. If you are staying in an area that is not so dependent on tourism (i.e. Kingston or St Andrew) then you wont have to bring as much money. But it never hurts to have a little bit more money than you need, just in case of emergencies. |

If you are not staying at a resort it can be quite expensive. Pretty much everything is imported into the country so expect things to be a bit more expensive. Imagine my surprise when I went to mail a few postcards and found out that it cost $1.00 per card to mail. |
