Some people just don't know what to write! Jamaica has its good aspects and bad, like EVERY other country. It is a beautiful place and its people are some of the warmest in the world. Just take the same precautions that you would when visiting any other country. For information, go to discoverjamaica.com and please, have a blast in Jamaica!!

real_duhaney
I am Jamaican and look at what the horrible people are saying about my country. Jamaica is a country we have goods and bads you just have to know how to enjoy the good and repel the bad, at times especially in the tourist areas in the country our people can be overly friendly, you just have to show them your boundaries,if you go to any other country you will have good and bad experience just don't be like some people on this page.(I have nothing more to write I'm just too distraught with other peoples answers.)

I just got back yesterday from Jamaica, while I stayed in Negril we did make the trip this time to Ocho Rios to do the Dolphins Cove...another responder was mentioning it but did not know the name. There you can snorkel w/stingrays, glass bottom kayak, mini boats...it was pretty fun. Dunn's River is across the street. Usually the resorts will have shuttles to different attractions, or shopping so ask them.

Please please disregard what those other ppl say about Jamaicans....I am have been to the island 2x now, this second time w/my two small children and we had the best vacation. Jamaicans are the easiest most laid back kind people. I have learned one thing If you act uptight and scared they mess w/you a little more, kinda like the same way you may pick on your sibling. Never have I felt in danger, and honestly I have left my bag full of money, cameras, etc and nothing has ever been stolen. You get what you put out....go there with an open mind and a genuine love and respect for the country/culture and you will have a great time.

BTW I have never(or anyone else I have traveled w/to the Island) had anyone 'ruse' me into buying drugs...generally the routine is you pass a Jamaican he says"You a'right man" and that is the invite to say "I would be better if I had....."
Trust me they are not just throwing drugs at you. But perhaps they were w/those other ppl above, because they were uptight and the Jamaicans thought perhaps if they just smoked some Ganga they wouldn't be....just a thought!! LOL

Enjoy Jamaica!! all of it the people are wonderful! freindly and very accomadating..dangerous.?.. not any worse than where you live right now[check your local news and see] treat them with respect and it will be returned..I need to go back soon....check out lovers leap in the parish of ST.Elizabeth awesome!! eat at 100 pots also in St.Elizabeth[near 9 mile I think where the bamboo grows over the road...you get to pick what ever you want for a meal delicious....many local dishes are worth trying y/s falls was fun and beautiful as was the tour up the Black river/we hired a fisherman to take us ALL the way up in his boat .we just paid for his gas...Never got to Ocho Rios...but me soon come!!!

I went to hedonism,,,, I loved Jamaica! I stayed at a resort and the people there recommended places to go,,, we went to the cliff that people dive off of, its the highest there is! I did not do that but everyone else did! We did the shops and we did horseback riding along the beach it was really nice and only 50 bucks! Jerk chicken there is awesome!!!!!!! Don't buy drugs off of the locals, you never know what you are getting!!! have a fun and safe trip!

Honestly, when I was in Ochos Rios, I wouldn't even go anywhere. I was scared out of my mind. I was contantly harassed, asked if I wanted drugs, etc. It is one of the more dangerous parts of Jamaica. First, I would recommend NOT traveling anywhere alone. Second, generally if you are staying at a resort, ask the resort for their recommendations and only do activities and tours provided by the resort or tour company (GWV, Apple, etc. or whatever one you used.). It is a beautiful country and worth seeing, but please be careful.

Shockey Monkey
On the Ocha Rios side of the island, go and do the Dunns River Falls, also you can do jungle canopy tours which are awesome.
Somewhere there is a sandbank (don't remember where) where you can snorkle with stingrays, I did that in grand Cayman and it was way cool.

People who talk bad things about Jamaica which is not true are going to hell, every country
have their up's and down, most people are afraid of their own shadows, Jamaica is a beautiful place to live a visit,
I have been their several time.

Jamaica is like any other country, you have your good and bad aspects. If youre the type of person who is interested in experiencing regular jamaica and exploring things other than tourist places, never travel alone, stay away from lone areas and dont talk to any drug dealers. If you want to just go there as an tourist then go to Dunns River falls, be carefull, the rocks are slippery. Dont believe ALL the outragous things about jamaica like macheine guns and that all jamaicans are rude people. Some people may be aggressive (I know Brazilian men are extremely aggressive too) and rude but then you have some people who are just very friendly. have fun and be safe!

Alsee
Why the hell when everyone talks about the Jamaica they always think about bad friggin' aspects it damn annoying! every country has its good and bad aspects for crying out loud!! So wat we have drugs, thieves and everything else, so does every other country! Everyone here just thinks about bad things it plain annoying, if i went to any of your country i wouldn't be thinking about bad aspects would I? I would want to have fun! Ocho Rios is a good resort, hope you have fun, you will really enjoy!

You will be arriving in Montego Bay then. Make sure to see some of Montego Bay as it is the Tourism hub. Many things to see in the mountains with the proper (trustworthy) guide. Check out the Ackee for breakfast if you like omelette's, you will like it (without the codfish). Be sure to smile, as much as possible, Jamaicans will be happy to smile back!

I was just in Ocho Rios on June 6. I assume your taking a cruise? If so they will let you pass through the security check and go walking but there are many slums right there and I was glad we did not attempt shop that day as the people sold drugs and it was generally nasty. We booked an excursion to a private beach which worked out well. Montego Bay has been experiencing problems with gangs attacking excursion parties from the ships. So stay away from there. If your going to an all inclusive resort, I suggest you take full advantage of what they have to offer on their secure facility. I would book excursions only thru them or your cruise line to be sure they are pre screened, and that you get back in time to sail if your cruising. The most popular stop is Dunn's Falls. They are a pretty big waterfall on the White river that you can climb. They also have rafting and tubing down the White river. I will warn you, the river is cold. I was suprised, but its headwaters come from a spring so that makes sense. If your doing any water sports buy sea shoes they are a must. You can also take a diving and snorkel excursion those are popular too. They have many other activities like horseback riding, swiming with dolphins and sting rays etc. Your travel agent, cruise line or resort should be able to supply you with excursion options info. They have this seasoning called Jerk, I'm still unclear as to exactly what the heck it is. They use this on just about everything. Jerk chicken was not bad, you'll just have to try a buffet and take a little of each thing to test the waters then you'll know what you liked and can pig out on those things.

Have a look at the page below. Have a good time.

The street people you will encounter there are the most aggressive (I daresay rude) in the Caribbean, in my experience. Be very reserved in your interaction with them, many of them will pester you if you give them any encouragement.

Italian Samurai
Watch out for nice jamacans who what to shake your hand. They will try to slip you drugs. Which is cool if thats what ur into, but sometime they work scams and as soon as they do it a cop will come out and try to arrest you unless you give them another kind of green. So just try to look out for scam artists.
