I am going to dominican republic next week, i'm from the uk. Is it best to take dominican peso or US dollar? |
I have been before and usually take dollars but my travel agent told me that the dominican peso is far better value at the moment. I don't know if she was telling the truth. Any advice from people who know would be great. Thank you |

you will get the best bang for your buck changing your sterling for Dollars and while here exchanging dollars for pesos.
They will screw you on the exchange rate using both sterling and dollars while here. Not only do they give you a bad rate on the purchase but on the change in pesos.
They don't exchange sterling at most banks and if you don't know where to go you wont even be able to cash the Sterling.
Today the exchange rate is 35.5 for dollars. If you check in the UK you will get a lot less. Always better to exchange here. |

TAKE THE PESO'S!
They give all change in Peso's, so if you pay with Dollars you can easily get short changed and ripped off and have no idea about it
Also they price stuff in Peso, and then you have to ask them how much it is in Dollars, which they can easily rise the price and you'd not know. |

WAS THERE IN NOVEMBER 2008, TAKE US DOLLARS AND LOADS OF 1 DOLLAR BILLS FOR TIPPING AS ITS HARD TO GET SMALL NOTE CHANGE, THE EXCHANGE RATE IS NOT AS GOOD OVER THERE FOR THE STIRLING AS IT IS HERE, SO KEEP THAT IN MIND, THE DOM PASO CAN BE USED BUT HARD TO CHANGE IT BACK TO STIRLING OVER HERE, HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY .IM BACK THERE IN MAY , CANNOT STAY AWAY |

It's best to bring your own currency and do your exchange with either a street dealer or one of the many currency eschange shops. You can always change back to pounds and dollars. In downtown Sosua, there are currenct shops on every block in the downtown area. But don't exchange at your hotel, since they will typically 1 or 2% worse than the street rate. The money changers adjust their rate everyday. You usually lose a percent or two every time you change.
You can change peso into dollars, but it will be rounded down to the nearest dollar.
The peso has been pretty stable for about five years now. I will often just get money out of an ATM which saves time. |

Great travel agent then........
the Dominicans will accept their own currency of course but they love the $ it speaks volumes, and things are mainly written in $ not in pesos. I excahnged some $ for pesos so I could buy little things, as they don't give you change back in $ only in pesos.
The other more important factor to know and this is very important to you
YOU CANNOT TAKE OUT D. PESOS FROM THE COUNTRY, so $ would be better as if you have any money left at the end of your holiday if you had pesos you would have to get rid of it before you return.
I have been several times to D.R and always take $
The peso may be better value (although I can't see it, )but you can use $ anywhere practically
You're making me jealous I wish I were going back to Punta Cana
I have added a currency converter for you to judge for yourself
http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/currency/convert?amt=1.00&from=GBP&to=DOP&submit=Convert
I forgot to add, please take asprin or paracetamol, mosquito spray etc, and what I did I tipped the chambermaid to bring me extra fresh towels every night as there were only 2 for 2 of us, so she was really great for a couple of dollars. (these people work so hard, and only get £150 a month!!) so when we were going home I left a beach bag with loads of odds and ends, shampoo, and all the other things I mentioned for the chambermaid. She was over the moon, but said I would have to give her a note saying she was allowed to take them...I did and she was really grateful. |
