the rate changes alot. best change rates can be found at banks, a little less at the airport, and horrible at resorts, at least thats the results i have found so far,
current rate is 1us=68.30j

Things are mark in Jamaican Dollars, your best bet is to exchange some of your money ,the rate is about J$66 to USD$1
say exchange USD$200 you get JA$12000, take you calculator with you,say they are selling you something for JA$2800 divide
that amount by 66 that will be the amount in us dollars, you can ask what is the exchange rate. |

No one is going to rip you off that way, just exchange your daily spending for Jamaican dollars, their are lot of ex chance store around, when you get to Jamaica you will get help at your hotel,OK be goo and take of your self, and don't smoke Ganja on the street you will go to jail. |

Your first order of the day is to change your money either at the bank or at the CAmbio or FX ( you get a great rate here). Change only what you will need for the day and do not buy in US dollars unless you are at a duty free. |

there is no ripping off. You have to bear in mind that the buying and selling of foreign exchange is a business. they sell it high and buy it low. The banks sell it at 68.00 and buy it at 64. so that will account for the difference when you are converting. no one buys it at 68. they sell it at that rate BUT buys it at 64.
if you are buying in US$ make sure that it is a inbond store. everybody else you MUST pay in Jamaican dollars. Do not buy at the first price that they give you, negotiate with them.
for example: if they tell you that it is $600 let them know that you have $500, he/she might tell you that is too low and he will take $550. |

Best bet is to change money at the airport or at a bank. You will lose from a few cents to a buck on the US dollar if you just use it in local circulation. |

when you find out what it is...write it down in a little note book and always refer to it before every purchase.I made a column Jamaican money is =my money it was very helpful ... check prices and remember some touristy places will charge more than the local markets ...spend your money there they need your dollars don't be afraid to bargain.........have fun... |

Like everywhere else, some places will want to give you the lowest rates, primarily the resorts. It is best to exchange it at the banks or cambio or even at the airports.
Generally, value for value, items in Jamaica are cheaper than in the US but the dollar fluctuates, mostly devaluates.
You will need to check the current rates. Take a look at this page. http://www.my-island-jamaica.com/currency_of_jamaica.html
From there, you can check the current value of the Jamaican Dollar as well as get a nice insight into Jamaican Money. |
