Keef N

I am going to the dom rep in may, is it best to take travellers cheques (dollars) or take currency.?

I know safety wise it is best to take travellers cheques. But is it better to change into American Dollars over there or into Dominican Peso. we are staying at the Rui Merengue at Bahai Maimon

Take American Dollars. They use to give me more for Travelers Checks but now more for Dollars. There are safes in the rooms so you should use them. No need to take fancy Jewelery either. You are considered rich just because you are a foreigner. Cash 100 US at a time. No need to have more.

Many places will take dollars but screw you on the rate and not only that they change also comes at an unfavorable rate. Anywhere from 3% to 33% less for your money than pesos.

While you are in Maimon check out the typical restaurants on the highway. When you leave the hotel go to the highway and make a right. 1 mile or so there are 3-4 tipicos. Goat is great, so is the Fish there.

Also take a day trip to Sosua and Cabarete. Great beaches and nitelife. Confressi's Ocean World is pricey but a great time.

Enjoy! I have been living here for 6 years.

I have been to the dominican 3 times and every time we have taken dollars and in cash, please don't forget to take some cash even if you do decide to take travellers cheques as you need to pay your 10$ entry fee (per person), becareful and take 10$ notes or smaller notes, cause sometimes they don't have change (have seen it happen to other people), at the hotel normally if you pay in dollar they return you in pesos, but everywhere takes dollars and at the end of the day you can always change your dollar when you come back, hard to change pesos, as nobody wants them.

Have a nice holiday!!!! Don't eat and drink too much hahahah

The best exchange rates are paid on US travellers cheques but don't change too much at a time as there is a limit to what you can change back and you must have the original documentation.

Hi

When we go to the Carib we take a small amount of Dollars. When and if we need any more we use our visa card the charges are less than using travellers cheques.

We are going to the Iberostar Dominicana in Bavaro in Sept, Hope you have a great time it is a nice place.

Hi, sorry I cant answer your question, I was going to ask the exact same thing! I too am going to the Riu Merengue at the end of April for 2 weeks - I have heard it is a really nice place so looking forward to going. Hope you enjoy it.

Some places may take American currency. If you decide to use American currency, make sure you get your change back in American currency. It would probably be best to change your money from cheques to pesos as you need it, not all at once, that way if it gets stolen, you only lose a little at a time.

Take traveller cheques or US dollars with you. Everybody wanted US. We also had trouble finding an ATM, even at the complex. You can exchange traveller cheques at reception but not into US dollars.

The best bet all round is to take US dollar travellers cheques. The exchange rate has been fairly stable around 33/1usd for quite some time, but the pound and the euro are not as well known here.

Also, an important tip, don't change money in the hotel if you can avoid it, the rates are always at least 10 % against you, go to the nearest bank in Puerto Plata, any of the big ones are ok. Do not fall for all the 'cambio' ( street money changers ) touts, because there are a lot of false notes in circulation, at least if you get them from a bank you can be reasonably secure.
