I am looking for an affordable way to talk to my girlfriend in Jamaica using a cell phone. Any ideas?

I am planning on buying a new cell phone. My girlfriend currently has a calling plan hooked up to her house phone so she can call the U.S. free anytime. My question is, what cell phone and package do you think would best suit me? Do cell phone companies offer affordable calling rates or plans if you are calling a specific country or number? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cell phones are too expensive and phone cards are not always inexpensive. Sometimes they can rip you off with the minutes, but they are useful.
But the best route is to use your computer. Especially you can use your yahoo messenger and make calls from your computer (or your friend calling you). It works great and the only thing you're paying for is your actual internet service and nothing else...and you can stay talking for as long as you want without racking up a phone bill.

Hi,
Majority of my family lives in Jamaica. I use Sprint International Calling Card. So far this is the best option. You can get a 5, 10, 20 or 50 dollar card. I use the $10 and I get 120 mins. A good thing about this card is that you do not loose you mins if the card is not used after a certain period. Also, you can add money to the card and be on ur merry way. Check a pharmacy near you.

Please dont try to use a cell phone the cost is crazy. the best thing would be to use a calling card when you buy it just make sure you check to see how much time time you will get for the country that you are calling to.

Too many phone cards are a rip off as they don't give you the minutes they say they do. It's a lot of trial and error and I have been using Senorita Bonita $5 card and get close to an hour.... about 50 minutes. I am going to check out the Sprint International card as suggested previously by someone else. (Thanks for the info.) I checked with my cell phone company, T-Mobile, several months ago regarding international plans and calling Jamaica....no deals.

Before i found internet calling through my cell phone (skype) i used phone cards, was trial and error so to speak. I found that the newer the card the better the rates and just kept changing. My husband has a good deal on his phone to ring me but i couldn't find anything to match.

Have you tried using VOIP? Basically get a phone and using your internet service.
