If it doesnt work out just move to Florida try something else...Who knoes??? And PR is hot you dont have to worry about the cold weather...you can go to the beach when ever you want...the only thing is if your a sick person or somtething the medical care isnt so good over there...but yeah it is cheaper over there....Best of Luck.. |

It sounds like you'll be living with relatives so you'll probably save in rent, but don't expect to have a lot of money. There are very few good paying jobs and everything in Puerto Rico is imported, including most of the groceries, most of which are manufactured in the US. The job situation there is terrible and the unemployment on the island is about 16%, that's 4 times the US unemployment rate.
Private auto insurance is prohibitively expensive. I had a 2000 Ford Ranger, and could not get a quote for less than $1800 for a 6 month premium. You can get insurance with the government, actually it's mandatory and is included in the price of the license plates, but be forewarned, actually getting paid on a claim is a useless exercise, the government there is always broke.
The crime rate in Puerto Rico is extremely high, so much so that the FBI stopped including the murder rates with the rest of the country because it skewed the averages. Puerto Rico's murder rate is twice as high. In the last 5 years, more Puerto Ricans have been murdered in PR, than US soldiers killed in Iraq.. |

Hey! You said you have two houses in PR. which is great, that means you are not going to pay any rent. You'll get to see amazing places and if you ever need help, someone is always there for you, call it family, friend, neighbor or some times even a complete stranger. Don't get involved in weird things and you will be fine. I'd live there all my life and I love it. Don't let ignorant people scare you about it and good look! |

I had the same idea. Move to Puerto Rico and have a good quiet life. After writing several letters and not getting asnwers I may not go. One lady answered some questions but if the people can't take a minute to help someone then maybe it's not a good place to live. |

Puerto Rico governor charged with corruption
updated 3:04 p.m. ET, Thurs., March. 27, 2008
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila was charged Thursday with 19 counts in a campaign finance probe, including conspiracy to violate U.S. federal campaign laws and giving false testimony to the FBI.
The indictment also charged 12 others associated with Acevedo’s Popular Democratic Party as a result of a two-year grand jury investigation, acting U.S. Attorney Rosa Emilia Rodriguez said.
Acevedo, a superdelegate for the Democratic Party who has pledged to support Sen. Barack Obama, served in Washington as the island’s nonvoting delegate to Congress and was elected governor in 2004 after campaigning on an anti-corruption platform. |

living expenses are not high compared to NY, but now PR pay taxes, I think its 7cents of each dollar. good jobs are kinda hard to find. For a professional career you need at least a requirement of a BA,MA in order to obtain a high paying job, and also consider you wont get paid a high wage because living expenses are a bit low. The positive part about it all is that as long as you get a job and work hard, you get to go next door and lay down on a tropical beach, relax and enjoy life! |

Good luck! I am moving there too! The good thing for you is that you have family there. I think that you are going to be fine. Take care! |

The taxes and insurance in NY are bad, but if you want to stay in NY and have a degree, go to Buffalo or Rochester and try and find a job. The cost of living is CHEAP, but there is more snow and less to do, but you can buy a nice and good sized house in Buffalo or Rochester for less than $100K.
If I were you, I would try the Puerto Rico thing for a while. I hope it works out! |

I live in Puerto Rico, but i lived a few years ago in New York and i know you will feel the differences once the plane lands in P.R., In Puerto Rico you will find things a little bit more expensive than the U.S., But the cost of houses, apartments, food, supplies, clothing are more cheaper in P.R.and life here is a lot more calm than the rush people have in New York. Beside, being a bilingual gives you more chances or opportunities to find a well job. Give yourself the chance to start a new life here in Puerto Rico, you will see beyond money the benefits of this beautiful island and their people. |
