I am sending my daughter to Jamaica for the summer with her dad's family,is it safe for her to travel alone?

My daughter will be 10 by the summer time. This will be her fist time back to Jamaica since she was 4 and she will be there by herself with his family. Do you think I should send her by herself or go down with her to drop her off?

Children fly solo and unaccompanied (no family member) during the summer months all the time.

It really depends on your daughter if she is a mature 10 or a timid 10.
First of all you should contact the airlines and ask about their procedures for a minor flying solo.
Second, be sure to book her on a non-stop direct flight.

I just had my 11 year old grandson flying solo from NY to Seattle Washington which is a 6 hour flight.

The representative gave me a pass so I could accompanied my grandson through security and to the gate. We had to fill out a form with his name and the person who was to pick him up in Washington. Phone numbers and address. I also had to sign the form and provide my address and phone. They put this in a plastic sleeve and he had to wear it around his neck.

Once I got to the gate, I waited until the plane left the gate. A representative escorted my grandson on board. Also, he was supervised by in-flight crew. He boarded the plane first.

My grandson flew American Airlines and I felt they were very professional and he would be safe.

Provide your daughter with some of her favorite snacks and money. Maybe a book, ipod, game to help pass the time on the plane.

Explain everything in detail to your daughter, so she will know what is going on.

If you think this is to much for her, go down with her and drop her off.

good luck)

my niece traveled from england to america. and from england to jamaica by herself since she was 8 years old....you daughter will be perfectly fine, every year a number of children travel alone back and forth from jamaica to the US....there is no need to worry she will be fine

You should definitely go with her, for her safety, and your peace of mind knowing that she arrived there safely.

My sister did this on two separate trips from Jamaica, travelling each way "by herself". She was about 7 and 8 each time. The Air Jamaica staff did a very god job of attending to her and making sure she was safe until I collected her. I even had to present an ID, and so would anyone else you list as responsible for collecting her. She also did the same on Jet Blue or Spirit (I can't remeber which)travelling in the US.

Like the other writer said, you get to accompany her right to the gate and they even tell you that you cant leave until she is safely on the flight and the flight is in the air. They get a big tag that is unmistakable to identify them as unaccompanied minors and are closely attended by the air hostesses. They also get a lttle pack of activity goods - coloring stuff etc.

Call the airline you choose and speak to them about their child handling policies. You should also consider your childs personal maturity and ability to handle situation. Also you should pack things in her carry on easily accesible back-pack to ensure she has all needs to be comforable on her flight and pass her time without anxiety or discomfort.

I think she will be fine, but if your more comfertable and feel better know she will be safe take her!
it could be a good bonding time.

NOT neccessary AT ALL..BIG waste of money to do that becuz it is REALLY pretty safe!! I was about 10 or 11 and my sis was 13..and we went solo! Just follow her all the way to the entrance to board the flight..like someone previously said..get the little slip to escort her ALL the way to boarding her flight

School her on what to do and what not to do..you know the SAFETY procedures and precautions...

What basically happened was we were accompanied by a personell after the flight was done. At the end of the flight they say, "all disabled, or minors please stay in the plane and for assistance!" About 15minutes after every1 comes out the plane you are escorted out with an airline personel and they walk you thru the WHOLE process..Contact the airline for more details on this procedure.

NO BIGGIE at all..trust me! They take you everywhere u need to go. There has been NO RECORD of a child being abducted from traveling alone on a flight.

Don't worry mom, she'll be JUST fine..i SURELY and GARUNTEE you she will! That is how positive of how safe she will be! they REALY take care of minors and disabled!

Just CONTACT the airlines..perhaps you may have to SIGN her up for it! But it's really not a big deal at all!

I remember this experinece as a young child and altho I don't know the FULL procedure I felt totally safe and comfortable..actually the best travel experience i've ever had becuz they tend to u so much!

You could pay extra to Air Jamaica to chaperon you child, they will be responsible for her and will only drop her off to the person you tell them will collect her in Jamaica. The next way is to go with her

I don't think I'd want my 10 year old flying alone if she had to make multiple conncections. If it's a non-stop flight, sure.

I was 12 the first time I flew alone and I was going to Jamaica. I didn't have anyone with me and I didn't even have flight attendants helping me to get to gates. I think it's safe but at 10 I would pay the extra money for a children's assistant to take her to each gate and put her on the plane. It would be much safer and cost less than you going to Jamaica dropping her off coming back and then going back to Jamaica to pick her up and bring her back.

Many adults usually send their children to Jamaica in the summer time. She will be safe when taking Air Jamaica, the flight attendant will make sure she is ok during flight and through the immigration process and customs. Air Jamaica usually have direct flight so she would not need to connect. She will be the first to bored the plane and the last to leave the plane. Someone will be responsible to pick her up at the airport which the airline should know ahead of time.

If your child seems fine with the idea of traveling by herself then let her travel by herself if not then go with her.

Its pretty safe dont worry about it.

There are too many weird people around now a days. If it was me I would definitely fly back with her. I don't know where you are flying from, but where I am from, it is like a 6 hour flight. What if she got scared, or someone tried to talk with her who did not have good intentions? Ten is really young to be flying internationally alone. Why not take advantage of the situation and head down there and then enjoy the country for a little bit of time yourself?

the only safe way MOM is for you to accompany and supervise your child or don't you read the news papers on what's happening to young children away from parental supervision

I absolutely would not send my ten year old daughter to Jamaica alone. Accompany her to the family home to get her settled in.

Go with her. It's pretty dangerous there.
