I am taking a cruise to Key West, Cozumel and Belize?

I am trying to find out how to be "street smart". Do I take cash, credit cards? What advise can you give me? What do I have to watch out for and what is safe? Thanks a bunch!! This will be our honeymoon.

We moved to Belize from the States about two years ago and it is nowhere close to being "very dangerous". We have traveled all over the country and the only place that I have found that you have to be a bit careful is Belize City. In Belize City do the same things that you would do visiting New York City - stay to the parts of the city that are active and have lots of people. Don't travel at night to unknown parts of town.

In terms of money, just bring US dollars. Everyone accepts US dollars (1 USD to 2 BZD) and but I would not carry excess amounts of cash. You can just go to an ATM when you need more money.

Take care and have a great honeymoon.

yeah i went to belize and cozumel on a cruise once. belize scared the crap out of me (try avoid riding a bus or going cave tubing) i loved cozumel though, it had alot of cool great shops all over and cheap stuff to. if i was u, i would not do any excursians on the cuzumel day bc there is so much to see like within 2 miles o where ur cruise docks

You are going to have a wonderful time!!! US cash is best and easiest in all ports and I wouldn't recommend credit cards only because we met people on the ship that used one in Cozumel and had mysterious charges on the card later...stick to cash.

As for Belize, the city is much like any central american city, no very pretty, the key is to get out of the city, into the beauty of the country. We've been twice now. Once we did the zipline and cave tubing tour with X-stream Cave Tubing and once went to Lamanai Ruins. Both were were incredible. Lamanai was with http://belizecruiseexcursions.com the tour takes you up the new river, we saw crocodiles, incredible birds and the blue butterflies and at the ruins, which were incredible, we saw howler monkeys!!

Cozumel was really nice too, we like the snorkeling, beaches and we did a great jeep tour there, booked with the same company we used in Belize, they have tours in Cozumel too. There we felt safe, busy around the port so getting away and doing a tour is a good idea

Belize is very dangerous. Don't leave the tourist section. Bring cash, it's easy to haggle at Cozumel and Belize. Key West is still the US so it's not really applicable there.

Key West - safe, credit cards and cash OK. Biggest threat will be to your sobriety. Many destinations easily walkable and doable on your own. Check out Hemmingway House, Mel Fisher museum, or Blonde Giraffe for Key Lime pie.

Coz - generally safe, cash is probably better. We like Paradise Beach but Chankanaab also OK. I'd opt for a cab instead of a ship excursion.

Belize is probably a good place to do a ship excursion. Take cash, not much of it, and small bills.

"Ports of Call" boards on Cruise Critic is a good resource.

Go to CruiseCritic.com, click on "Boards", then "Ports of Call" for lots of info from experienced cruisers. KW and Coz are both easy and safe to do on your own [provided, of course, you MAKE SURE you get back to the ship on time]. Belize is iffier - you don't want to be wandering around by yourselves. If you're into snorkeling, you can probably get an excursion that leaves directly from the ship [thus avoiding the long tendering each way], say to Goff's Caye or one of the other little islands off the coast. We LOVED Goff's Caye. I know people who've done the zipline or the caves, but they both involve quite a bit of time to get to the locations.

Have a great cruise. And, congratulations on your marriage!!

dont travel alone dont wear a lot of jewelry and use a credit card, i'm sure you'll be fine it's not like you'll be having out in the bad neighbourhood anyways if you're going on vacation then you'll probably be going to the vacation parts in Belize where you will be safe so you can probably take cash, i'm sure everything will be fine
