Cuba isn't very appealing, and they have serious problems.

Mexico is very tourist friendly. Cancun is awesome, and so is Acapulco. GORGEOUS, great night life, and people are friendly. Don't do the obvious travel faux pas, like walk around alone at night.. but I think Mexico would be much safer. There will likely be more Americans and more English speaking people. The resort area of Cancun/Acapulco is built for tourism, and they want to make you happy. Turquoise water on the Atlantic. Better food, more fun.

Been to Cancun 3 times and Cuba once. Cuba is a very nice place and the people are great. Cancun, however is the best place I've been to.....so much to do and see...it's unbelievable! Trust me, Cancun is better by far.

i've been ot both cuba and mexico... both have their ups and downs. if you are looking to relax, drink some beer and sit by the beach, all inclusive is the way to go. backapcking would be for if you were planning on spending a bit more than a week, and travelling around.

cuba i found had much nicer beaches. the staff at resorts were extremely friendly, and a tip wasn't always expected. even the items you give for tips doesn't always have to be money. items like soap, shampoo, and colouring books and crayons for their kids are greatly appreciated. my father gave a bartender his yankees cap, and i kid you not, this guy wanted to kiss my dad, he was so grateful! guess his son was really into baseball.

mexico had more to do beyond the resorts; more activities, shopping, restaurants, and places to see. i also found that when you left the resort there wasn't as many people begging.

i think if i had my choice to go back to one or the other, it would be cuba. i enjoyed just relaxing at the resort. but if you're looking to explore and see the sights, mexico is the place to go.

Ask yourself this .. would you rather be shot and/or mugged or would you rather get awsome service and great food with nice people?

Considering the crime which goes on in Mexico, I would give it a wide berth unless I was staying in an AI. Cuba on the other hand is excellent either for the traveller striking out on his own , very safe, staying at bed and breakfasts (casa particulars) or AI resorts. There is also an excellent modern bus system which can take you all over the island. My sugestion for a first visit would be staying at Varadero, dozens of excellent resorts a 20 kilometre white sand beach like few others, lots to do in town or at your resort and it's close to Havana, a"must see. Cubans who live in Cuba will welcome you with open arms, chances are before you leave you wil be planning your next trip. Check the links below they have lots of information, You can check resort reviews on trip advisor.
