I have a visa credit card issued by tesco. Will this be accepted in cuba? |
is it better to bring enough cash for sundries and pay for excursions by credit card? if so what would be recommended for a 2 week stay, all inclusive, in cayo coco?

Yes, Tesco is UK based. As long as the credit card is not US-based, it can be used in Cuba.
It's good though to bring cash with you if you can instead of making cash advances on your card. It can be a little bit more expensive in the longrun if you do everything on the card as it is usually converted to USD then to your funds. Depending on the cost of an excursion use your card.
But it's good to bring your card as back up. Use your cash to convert every couple of days...not all at once as you'll need to change your money back returning home as CUC have no value outside of Cuba (and can only be done in Cuba).
As for where to stay in Cayo Coco...Tryp Cayo Coco is a beautiful resort. It's considered one of the nicest, liveliest and more wished for to stay at after being at other resorts in Cayo Coco.
It's also one of my favourites, so yes I'm biased lol :-)

But seriously, it's open concept design is beautiful. Bright, fresh, and easy to get around. Everything is near each other but it's not closed in.
The staff are amazing! The food is great and accomodation is nice too. But when you book a room, try to make sure it's higher up. Being a tropical, humid environment things tend to be damp and 1st floor rooms in some areas are more damp and musty.
And being higher up, the views are nicer.
If you decide to book at this place, feel free to email me and I can give you more information regarding the place, activities, and the individuals that work there. And the beach is just gorgeous!
You would have an amazing time there for sure!

Whilst Cuba accepts any Visa or Mastercard (as long as the machine is working and they can get a phone connection), cards issued through a US bank will not work in Cuba - that includes many cards issued through MBNA Europe in the UK. You need to check with Tesco who operates the cards for them. (I have used a Tesco card in Cuba - but that was some years ago, and things may have changed since).
You may find that the best rate to exchange cash is actually at the Cadeca at the airport - some hotels don't give good rates. (Perhaps ask on http://debbiesreviews.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=Cuba for specific details of the hotel where you are going).
In fact this thread there gives details of excursion prices http://debbiesreviews.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=Cuba&action=display&thread=8699
for conversion rates see http://www.banco-metropolitano.com/moneda.php?pid=moneda&l=es
Have a great holiday !
Have you booked already - where are you staying ? |

All over the world, before travelling, call tesco credit card let them know you are travelling otherwise your card wont work outside UK. |

Your card is fine in hotels, tourist shops etc but don't expect small shops or cafes to accept any credit card. There is also a shortage of cash machines and you may have to use your hotel - expensive. |

All people are interested in ,is whether the card is Visa, Mastercard or american express. The fact that tesco issued it on Visa's behalf doesn't make any odds. So it should be taken anywhere visa is accepted. |

Any Visa credit card is recognised all over the world. One tip never draw cash with a credit card unless an emergency as it is more expensive. Use credit card for large purchases, and any switch card you have for cash in the 'hole on the wall' in the local currency of the bank. Also it is generally cheaper to get the local currency once you are there rather thank taking lots of cash from your own country. Split them up and away from your cash so if you lose a bag or purse you have something to fall back on |
