Good luck to you! Salaries in PR are very low and even more for Social workers. Your best bet will be to work for the government due to all of their benefits. Here is some info on that gov. agency: http://www.gobierno.pr/GPRPortal/StandAlone/AgencyInformation.aspx?Filter=268.

And this is the website: http://www.familia.gobierno.pr/.

There is not much info but at least phone numbers to locate their offices. Another option will be working at school through the Department of Education which is located in Hato Rey at Luis Munoz Rivera Ave (Milla de Oro). Anyone can tell you which one is the building, it is huge.

The fact that you are bilingual could help you more in private schools where a great % of the population is English speaking. Either way is a plus.

I found an opening at the Tribunal General de Justicia @ throughout the island: http://www.tribunalpr.org/orientacion/empleos/trabajadorsocial.html

Good Luck! Professionals are leaving the island due to the lack of jobs. Knowing English is really NOT going to help much in your field. You can check the Department of Education Regional offices for an application. Good luck in your search!

Candidly, you are making a risky move. Puerto Ricans are leaving the Island in truck-loads in search of work abroad. There is not enough employment for the locals let alone for outsiders. Perhaps you should know that government job placements here are political. You need a "pala" to get in... (you need inside help to get in) Sadly, It takes more than just having a degree and being bilingual to get a job here. Sorry but I must tell it like it's. I wish I could be of more help to you....I, too, had to emigrate to find work and raise a family abroad in the mainland. I am a professional in the medical field.

The university of Purto Rico has a wonderful social work department. I would encourage you to make contact there. They will be able to direct you to local resources. Also the local chapter of NASW would be a very good resouce as well. Building a network will really help you. DA

Try searching for ASUME

Hi! I just came back from a wk's stay in Puerto Rico. I was w/a group who helped w/Christian Community Center, Caimito, (also their website page name). The director's name is Juan Figueroa, ph# 787-789-8758. He has been w/the center for 30+ yrs. He & his wife, Isabel, get out in the community to see how they can help, & has a staff that serves a noon meal to the community every wkday. Very people-oriented. They would love to hear from you. Check it out!
