The crime rate is pretty high, but it is concentrated to bad neighborhoods in urban areas & usually between those involved with drugs & illegal activities. PR is a safe place to buy a vacation home.

If you want to have a home in San Juan, then look at the areas of Old San Juan, Isla Verde, Condado, Miramar, Carolina & Ocean Park. Stay away from certain parts of Rio Piedras & anywhere close to housing projects. If you buy a home in San Juan you will pay more money, but you will be in a big city, so that is normal. Also if you are a permanent resident there are no property taxes, if you are not then yes there are property taxes.

You can also buy a home outside of San Juan. In a small beach or mountain town. You will pay less & there will be less crime & more peace & quiet, however you will be out of the city. If you like to surf, check out Rincon. If you like the mountains check out Utuado or the central area. If you like golfing check out Dorado, for fishing & boating check out Fajardo. You can use this classified sight to find a home. Just be sure to check the house & neighborhood out before buying. Many homes that are newly built are in gated communities.

If you are planning to live in PR , the best area to live is in the center of the island.

It all depend what are You planning to do? retire? or are You planning to work and how far are you willing to travel?

Utuado is a beautiful, quiet town in the mountains...arecibo is also quiet and beautiful but they're abouty 1 hour from the capital San Juan...

Mansiones de EspaƱa in Mayaguez, west coast of Puerto Rico. It's a gated community with stunning homes adjacent to Mayaguez Resort & Casinos (formerly known as The Mayaguez Hilton).

I love puerto ricos culutre but my girlfriend move here from there because the crime rate was so high. you may want to look that up first

It depends on your definition of "nice". For me that means to live in a city within the San Juan metropolitan area, near:
* work place,
* shopping centers,
* universities,
* hospitals,
* goverment buildings,
* express ways, etc.
(currently living at Carolina, in the past I had live in Bayamon, CataƱo, and San Juan).

For other people "nice" means living in a small quiet town, within the mountains, or at the coast.
