Until January, 2008, you can travel by ship from USA to Bahamas and other Caribbean destinations with your birth certificate and photo ID. However, you cannot board a flight into the US without a passport, so be sure your cruise is round trip. In Jan 2008, you will need a passport for any travel outside the US.

Go to us.gov/passport for complete info.

None of the other answerers seem to have read the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative...the passport law. See 1st website below. Passports are Not required for SEA travel until Jan. 2008...and poosibly later...but could be as early as Jan. 2008. However, some cruise lines do require their passengers to have passports, so the best thing to do is call and ask them what their requirement is. See 2nd website for passport info. if you know you will bw taking the cruise after the 1st of next year, best to send in your application now.

Never mind that!

Have you consulted the Bahamian embassy or consulate yet?!?

The following links should help you tremendously!

Have fun on your Bahamian cruise!

No, the rule now is if you are traveling by ship you only need proof of citizenship such as Id, birth certificiate and if you applied for a passport bring that with you as extra clarification but no you aren't in need of that anymore, they have expanded it. It is my air that you need the passport.

The above responders are correct about the Sea Travel criteria of the Travel initiative. However, as a warning!!!! If you get sick and have to be taken off the ship to a local hospital (or if you are injured on a shore excursion) and cannot reboard the ship before it sails you will be unable to fly home without a passport. Also if you get off the ship and don't make it back before it sails you cannot fly home. It is safest therefore to stick with the cruise line sponsored shore excursions rather than the ones you set up for your self on shore.. They may be more expensive, but, if they are delayed getting back, they will hold the ship departure. If you go off on your own make sure you get back in plenty of time.

Passports are the best way to travel now, but not absolutely required for cruise travel until Jan 2008 (and that will probably be extended as they are having trouble getting to all the passport requests)

Yes, you must have a valid passport or evidence that you have applied for one. (Note that this "evidence" rule will expire in September.)

However, I do note that some one-day cruise lines say you don't need one.

yes, now anytime you leave the great country you will need a passport to get back in, unless you come back illegally. good luck getting one, there is about a 6 month waiting period.

yes,

HI!!
yeah, to go and come back, you probably wont need one to go there but u HAVE to have one to come back even if you say you are from the US you cant get back into the US, unles like one of your family members send you your passport, but if you dont have one you need to get one atleast 3 weeks before you go, so you can get proof of application, so you dont have to get it expedited, go to travel.state.gov and look for further information!

My sister applied for one the same time me and my mom did and she got hers in like 3 weeks and we didnt expadite it!! we were amazed lol, considering all the passport applications that are going thru!!
